Serious Crash on Bassett Road Leaves Woman Critically Injured; Neighbor Arrested After Interfering With Investigators

KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. — A 40-year-old woman is in critical condition after a violent head-on crash Friday night on Bassett Road that also led to the arrest of a nearby resident who deputies say interfered with their investigation, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision happened around 8:39 p.m. in the 34500 block of Bassett Road. Deputies say the woman was driving eastbound in a 2025 Nissan Rogue when she struck a large piece of farm equipment — a John Deere grain drill — that was being towed by a 43-year-old man operating a 2011 Ford F-350. The impact was severe enough that the woman was ejected from her vehicle. She was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, where she remains in critical condition.

Deputies said the driver of the truck is cooperating and submitted to a legal blood draw, which is standard procedure in serious crashes. At this point, investigators do not believe alcohol contributed to the crash.

Because of the seriousness of the incident, the Kenosha County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded to conduct a full reconstruction. A sheriff’s deputy launched a drone to document the scene from above while another deputy served as a spotter — a routine safety practice.

During the reconstruction, deputies say a nearby resident, 39-year-old Kevin Berglund, began shining a flashlight toward the drone and at the deputies. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Berglund ignored multiple commands to stop and return inside his home, instead continuing to yell at deputies. Authorities noted they believed he was intoxicated.

Deputies attempted to address the disturbance, but Berglund allegedly advanced toward them and resisted efforts to detain him. The distraction forced the drone operator to divert attention, causing the drone to strike nearby trees and crash. Berglund was arrested and now faces charges of Resisting and Obstructing, Disorderly Conduct, and Criminal Damage to Property.

The identities of the drivers involved in the main crash have not been released as the investigation continues.

Sheriff David Zoerner issued a statement emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, noting that interference with active investigations “creates unnecessary risks” and will not be tolerated.
