SALEM LAKES, Wis. — Village President Rita Bucur declared a state of emergency Saturday as flooding across Salem Lakes caused road damage, property damage and multiple rescues throughout the community.
The declaration came after several days of heavy rainfall left roads washed out, water rising near homes and dangerous conditions across the village. Bucur said the flooding has strained local resources and forced Salem Lakes officials to seek help from Kenosha County and the State of Wisconsin.
Village officials said the flooding has damaged both public and private property and poses a continued threat to the safety, health and welfare of residents. Officials warned that additional flooding and rescues could continue in the coming days as water levels remain high.
According to the emergency declaration, village officials said Salem Lakes has already exhausted available local resources while trying to respond to the flooding. The declaration allows the village to take extraordinary measures to protect residents and public infrastructure.
Emergency crews from Salem Lakes Fire Rescue and partner agencies remained active throughout the weekend responding to calls and monitoring conditions.
Village officials urged residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways, warning that even a small amount of moving water can carry a vehicle off the road. Residents were also told not to walk through floodwaters because hidden debris, open ditches and unstable ground may be concealed beneath the water.
Officials are asking residents to obey all road closures and barricades and to use caution near rivers, streams and drainage areas, where water levels can rise quickly. They also encouraged residents to check on elderly neighbors and others who may need help during the flooding.
Residents with emergencies are being told to call 911. For non-emergency flooding concerns, Salem Lakes Fire Rescue can be reached at 262-620-3880, Village Hall at 262-843-2313 and the Public Works Department at 262-862-2371.
“The Village is documenting area flooding and damage from the recent flood event. If you have photos of flooding and/or damage, we would like to hear from you. Please submit your photos along with the nearest address or location and a brief description to [email protected]“
