KENOSHA, Wis. — Adam Scott Threlkeld, 45, of Milwaukee, the man accused of murdering Antero Medina III, 33, inside Shenanigan’s tavern and attempting to murder two Kenosha Police officers on Sept. 20, appeared in Kenosha County court Thursday afternoon in a wheelchair. Supplemental Court Commissioner Tracey Braun formally set his cash bail at $5 million, continuing the amount previously imposed as temporary bail by Court Commissioner Daniel “Catch & Release” Kellum. Threlkeld, represented by defense attorney Zebulon Patek, did not contest the $5 million amount.

The courtroom was attended by several of the Kenosha Police Department’s highest-ranking officials, including Chief Patrick Patton, Deputy Chief Brent Sagedal and Inspector Aaron Dilhoff. Kenosha Police Officer Samuel Gibbons, one of the two officers Threlkeld is accused of attempting to murder, was also present, along with other officers.

District Attorney Xavier Solis personally appeared for the prosecution during the hearing, which lasted approximately eight minutes, from 1:17 to 1:25 p.m. Threlkeld had previously been unable to appear in court because he remained hospitalized after being shot by police during the Sept. 20 gun battle. Thursday marked his appearance in the courtroom following those earlier adjournments.

Threlkeld faces seven felony charges, including first-degree intentional homicide with use of a dangerous weapon in Medina’s death and two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide with use of a dangerous weapon involving Gibbons and Officer Nikki Schend. He also faces two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by a felon and felony bail jumping.

Bail Conditions Prohibit Weapons, Alcohol And Victim Contact
In addition to the $5 million cash bail, Braun ordered Threlkeld not to possess or consume alcohol or controlled substances without a prescription. He is also prohibited from possessing weapons, particularly firearms or edged weapons, and drug paraphernalia.

Braun further ordered Threlkeld to have no contact with several witnesses, Medina’s family, and Officers Gibbons and Schend, except in an official capacity. The $5 million temporary cash bail had originally been imposed by Kellum during a Sept. 22 hearing while Threlkeld was hospitalized. The court record was corrected Thursday to clarify that Kellum, not Judge Jason Rossell, presided over that original bail hearing.

Police Say Threlkeld Fired 15 Rounds At Officers
According to the criminal complaint, Threlkeld shot Medina once in the chest inside Shenanigan’s, 2427 52nd St., following an argument. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Medina attempting to avoid the confrontation before Threlkeld pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired.

Minutes later, police say Threlkeld opened fire on responding officers near 53rd Street and 24th Avenue. Investigators determined that he fired approximately 15 rounds during the confrontation, striking Gibbons’ squad car multiple times, including its hood, windows and tires.

Both Gibbons and Schend returned fire. Threlkeld was wounded and taken into custody. According to the complaint, Threlkeld made several incriminating statements while hospitalized, including, “I tried to shoot at the cops, I did shoot the cops.” He also allegedly complained that he had run out of ammunition before police shot him and said he wished he had another magazine.

Previously Free On No-Cash Bail In Milwaukee
At the time of the Kenosha shootings, Threlkeld was free on no-cash bail in a pending Milwaukee County felony case involving the battery of a Milwaukee Police officer.

In that case, prosecutors alleged Threlkeld used a knife to carve letters into bulletproof glass at the Milwaukee Police Administration Building before punching an officer in the right eye, causing pain and damaging his glasses.

Threlkeld subsequently pleaded guilty to felony battery of a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, but the court withheld entry of the judgments of conviction under a deferred prosecution agreement involving Milwaukee County Drug Treatment Court.

Court records show that during his participation in the program, Threlkeld was commended for compliance and awarded a $50 gift card.

The Kenosha charges now include felony bail jumping because Threlkeld was prohibited from committing new crimes while released in the Milwaukee case.

Threlkeld’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m., for a preliminary hearing before Court Commissioner Daniel E. Kellum.
