WILMOT, Wis. — Motorists traveling through downtown Wilmot this weekend will need to find alternate routes as Kenosha County prepares for a full closure of Highway W beginning Friday night, October 16, 2026, and continuing through early Monday morning, October 19.
According to an October 13 construction update from Kenosha County, Highway W will be completely closed between Highway C west (114th Street) and Highway C east (113th Street), beginning at 10 p.m. Friday. The roadway is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday, following approximately 56 hours of closure.
The temporary shutdown is part of the ongoing Highway W Improvement Project, which involves resurfacing the roadway from Wilmot south to the Illinois state line. Construction began in April 2026 and is expected to continue through late fall.
During the weekend closure, construction crews will install a massive 76-inch culvert, complete storm sewer road crossings and make additional storm sewer connections. The work will take place over four 10-hour shifts throughout the weekend.
County officials are warning residents and businesses in downtown Wilmot to expect increased construction traffic and noise, including during nighttime hours. Motorists traveling through the area will be required to use alternate routes, although local access will be maintained throughout the closure.
The existing closure of Highway W south of 114th Street will remain in effect even after the downtown portion reopens Monday morning. That section must remain closed to allow crews to continue construction farther south.
A detour map released by Kenosha County directs through traffic around the construction zone using surrounding county highways, including Highways C, CK, KD, F and B. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional travel time.
The Highway W project is one of the county’s ongoing road improvement efforts, with construction scheduled to wrap up later this fall. Officials have not announced a specific completion date.
Residents with questions about the construction or its impact on their properties can contact Project Leader Kevin Klipstein at 262-397-7236 or by email at [email protected].
Additional information is available through the Kenosha County Highway Department at www.kenoshacountywi.gov/highways.
Kenosha County officials thanked residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation as crews work to complete the project.
