Union Pacific Employee, Killed By Train Near 13th Avenue And 69th Street

Stopped Metra and Freight Trains Wednesday

A Union Pacific employee was stuck and killed by a Metra/UP train at about 12:15 p.m. today in a freak accident. A 34-year-old Burlington, WI man named Austin Scott Raysby was reported to be the victim. “We are saddened by the loss of a Union Pacific family member in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family and the employees who worked alongside him…Our emergency response team is on-site investigating the incident. No one else was hurt,” said a Union Pacific representative late Wednesday.

Raysby has been a conductor for Union Pacific since October of 2011. According to his LinkedIn his position involved “Overseeing and manage the safe movement of trains. Coordinating the daily activities of train crews such as switching cars, making or splitting up trains in yards, or moving cars between yards and training new employees. Maintaining compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations while overseeing the loading and unloading of cargo. Conducting train inspections per federal requirements. Working outdoors in all weather conditions. Working on call 24 hour basis 365 days of the year.”

According to Kenosha Police Lt. Josh Hecker announced earlier today that the department investigated an accident involving a southbound Metra train and a pedestrian. The accident occurred around 12:17 P.M., near the 6800 block of the Union Pacific North Line.

At the time of the accident the train was carrying about 20 passengers. There are no reports of any passengers claiming injury. Detectives from the Kenosha Police Department worked with Union Pacific’s emergency response team, and Metra Police to investigate the accident. All passengers that were aboard the train transported back to the Kenosha Metra Station to safely exit the train.

Metra provided KPD with the following message to provide our local commuters and Metra passengers:

“Due to train #338 striking a pedestrian near Kenosha, inbound and outbound trains will only operate between Chicago OTC and Waukegan. Trains will not stop at Kenosha, Winthrop Harbor, and Zion until further notice. Users can go to metra.com and check service alerts for the UP North Line for the most up to date information.”
