(Kenosha County Sheriff)

PARIS, Wis. — A 27-year-old Bloomfield man is facing felony charges after allegedly trapping his pregnant girlfriend in his truck and driving recklessly through Kenosha County while screaming at her, ignoring her repeated pleas to be let out, and accelerating while she attempted to flee the moving vehicle.

Kevin R. Elkin made his first appearance in Kenosha County intake court Monday, where Commissioner William Michel II set his cash bond at $2,500. Elkin is charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety, false imprisonment, and disorderly conduct in connection with a disturbing incident that occurred Friday, May 16, in the Town of Paris.

According to the criminal complaint, a witness called 911 that evening after seeing a man and woman in a heated dispute inside a vehicle near the Paris Motel. The witness, Megan Kusek, told dispatchers she observed the passenger door open multiple times and saw the woman’s leg partially sticking out as if she were trying to escape. Concerned, Kusek followed the vehicle and eventually pulled up behind it when it briefly stopped.

By the time deputies arrived on scene, Elkin had already left. They spoke to the woman, identified in court records as his girlfriend and the mother of his unborn child, who said she was approximately two months pregnant. She told deputies the argument began earlier that day at a laundromat in Twin Lakes and escalated when they returned to Elkin’s residence in Bloomfield.

The woman described Elkin as belligerent and verbally abusive, screaming at her that he didn’t want the baby and urging her to get an abortion. She said he called her degrading names, including “dumbass,” and that she went outside to distance herself by sitting in his truck. Instead of leaving her alone, Elkin allegedly followed her into the vehicle, got behind the wheel, and began driving, continuing the argument.

As he drove toward the Paris Motel area, she claimed Elkin became increasingly erratic and aggressive behind the wheel. She told deputies she repeatedly begged him to stop the truck and let her out, especially when they reached the intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 142. She said she opened the passenger door in an effort to escape, but Elkin allegedly hit the gas, forcing her to close the door to avoid falling or being injured.

She said she was terrified by his behavior, especially given her pregnancy. The situation only calmed when Kusek, the witness, pulled up behind them in her own vehicle. Elkin then pulled over briefly and allegedly began yelling at Kusek, before driving off again and punching his steering wheel in frustration. He finally returned to the motel and let the woman out before leaving the scene.

Deputies later interviewed Elkin, who admitted that the two had been arguing and acknowledged that she asked him to stop the vehicle. He told deputies, “She did. I guess she kinda did,” and claimed he was trying to calm her down and didn’t want her returning to her mother’s house “all heated.”

Elkin was arrested and booked into the Kenosha County Jail. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines on the Class G felony count of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, an additional six years and $10,000 in fines for false imprisonment, and up to 90 days in jail for disorderly conduct.

The court also ordered Elkin to have no contact with the victim. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for May 28.
