KENOSHA, Wis. — A 55-year-old Kenosha man is facing multiple domestic abuse charges after prosecutors say he repeatedly punched a woman, fractured her nose, and stopped her from calling 911 during a violent confrontation earlier this month.

James Henry Russell Jr. appeared in Kenosha County Circuit Court Monday, where he was formally charged with felony intimidation of a victim, substantial battery, and disorderly conduct, all with domestic abuse enhancers. Court Commissioner William Michel II ordered $5,000 cash bail and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Aug. 15.
According to the criminal complaint, the alleged assault happened late on the night of Aug. 2 at a residence on 122nd Avenue. The 42-year-old woman told police that she and Russell were arguing when he struck her in the face with a closed fist. She said she tried to leave the room, but Russell grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back inside, then continued to hit her in the head and body.
Investigators said the woman reported being punched in the head eight or nine times and struck in the shoulder area five or six times. She told police she tried to call 911, but Russell allegedly ripped the phone from her hands and told her, “You ain’t calling no one, I’m not going to jail.”
The woman said she locked herself in the bathroom for the rest of the night. The next day, Russell took her to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital for treatment but allegedly instructed her to lie to medical staff about how she was injured. Doctors diagnosed her with a fractured nose and referred her to a specialist.
The victim told police she left Wisconsin for Georgia three days later to stay with her mother because she feared for her safety. She also said she didn’t contact law enforcement sooner because she was afraid of retaliation from Russell.
Police arrested Russell without incident on Aug. 8 at the Value Inn, where the couple had stayed for extended periods since February.
If convicted of the most serious charge, Russell faces up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
