The late Judge Wilk often said that a person has a right to sit in a corner and drink themselves to death but when they get into a car that’s a different story.
This woman is a threat to others and herself. We don’t have a foolproof way to fix this (at least one that’s legal). And it’s a sign of the times. The good news is that the number of first offense drunk drivers has decreased. The bad news is that repeat offenders are increasingly more “hard core.”
The thing about alcohol and other drugs is that a person never knows what their reaction will be. Some people can take it or leave it. Others become dependent. You have no idea which one you’re going to be. And we live in a society, and particularly in a state, where alcohol use is a cultural thing.
