KENOSHA, Wis. — Kenosha Unified School District has been awarded a $55,000 unrestricted, multi-year grant to support student mental health programs across the district.
The grant comes from the WEA Member Benefits Foundation, which selected KUSD in part because of what the organization described as the district’s comprehensive approach to student mental health and its efforts to provide services throughout the school system.
KUSD currently provides support related to student drug and alcohol issues, employs onsite clinicians who work individually with secondary students and has school psychologists serving all district buildings.
“We are honored to be awarded this incredibly generous grant,” KUSD Director of Special Education and Student Support Stacy Guckenberger said. “We are deeply grateful for our partnership with the WEA Member Benefits Foundation and how they support our students’ mental health needs.”
District Plans To Expand Services
KUSD said it plans in the coming years to increase mental health support for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, address chronic absenteeism, expand a mental health “toolbox” for staff and strengthen community mental health engagement.
WEA Member Benefits Foundation Executive Director Steve Goldberg said the organization was impressed with KUSD’s existing resources and relationships in the community.
“Their comprehensive approach, strong community relationships and commitment to supporting students across grade levels make Kenosha a valuable addition to our mental health funding initiative,” Goldberg said.
KUSD is Wisconsin’s fourth-largest school district and serves more than 18,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The WEA Member Benefits Foundation’s school-based mental health initiative now includes 29 school districts and reaches more than 173,000 of Wisconsin’s approximately 785,000 K-12 students.
