PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. – A 34-year-old Illinois man is facing multiple domestic abuse charges after Pleasant Prairie police say he strangled his girlfriend, threatened her with a knife, and carried rat poison he allegedly intended to use to kill both of them.

Drashawn J. Griffen, of Woodstock, was in Kenosha County Circuit Court on Friday, where Court Commissioner William Michel II set his cash bail at $20,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 15.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a residence on 104th Street on Aug. 7 after the victim’s sister reported that Griffen had battered the woman and was armed with a knife. The victim, a 43-year-old Pleasant Prairie woman, later told officers the abuse began about five months ago and escalated the night of Aug. 6 when Griffen punched her, choked her, and threatened to kill her.
She said Griffen refused to let her leave, threatened her with a large knife, and carried a bag of rat poison, telling her he planned to make her eat it before killing himself. Later that night, she awoke to find him standing over her bed. Griffen allegedly attempted to hang himself with an extension cord and blocked her efforts to call 911.
Police say Griffen returned to the victim’s home the next morning despite a prior no-contact bond condition from an earlier domestic abuse case. Officers later arrested him in the parking lot of a Kenosha hospital, where the victim was being treated for large bruises, scratches, and a black eye.
The victim appeared in court Friday and addressed the court, with visible bruising to both eyes and other injuries on her face.
Griffen is charged with false imprisonment, strangulation and suffocation, battery, carrying a concealed knife, misdemeanor bail jumping, and disorderly conduct. If convicted on all counts, he faces more than 14 years in prison.
