PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. – A 20-year-old Illinois man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he fled from officers in a stolen vehicle Tuesday evening, reaching speeds of 70 mph in a 30 mph zone and endangering pedestrians and motorists before crashing near Interstate 94.
Jason Gonzalez, of Romeoville, Ill., appeared in Kenosha County Circuit Court on Wednesday, where Court Commissioner William Michel II ordered a $50,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
According to the criminal complaint, Pleasant Prairie Police Officer Kopera spotted a black Nissan Armada without license plates at about 6:57 p.m. on Aug. 12 near Highway 165 and 120th Avenue. The officer saw the SUV parked moments later at a BP gas station. As he approached and asked about the plates, the driver allegedly accelerated away.
Police say Gonzalez sped through an area with pedestrians and vehicles, drove the wrong way on a road, and hit speeds estimated at more than double the limit before losing control on a curve. The SUV struck a curb and grass median, and Gonzalez allegedly ran toward the Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlets, where he was arrested outside the Nike store.
Along the path of the foot chase, officers recovered a plastic bag containing 31.7 grams of suspected marijuana. Investigators determined the SUV had been stolen with its keys from a Bolingbrook, Ill., restaurant on July 3.
Gonzalez is charged with driving or operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent, fleeing or eluding an officer, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and obstructing an officer. All counts include repeater enhancers due to a 2024 felony conviction in Cook County, Ill., for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/vehicle. Convictions could bring additional years of imprisonment beyond the standard maximum sentences.
