KENOSHA, Wis. — A 70-year-old Kenosha man is facing multiple charges after allegedly choking a restaurant manager who confronted him for using a racial slur at a downtown bar.

(Kenosha County Sheriff)
Paul M. Gehrke was charged Friday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with strangulation and suffocation, misdemeanor battery, and disorderly conduct. Court Commissioner William Michel II set a $2,500 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 27.
According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to Captain Mike’s bar around 10:40 p.m. on August 21 for a report of a fight. The manager, a man who had asked Gehrke to leave the premises for repeatedly using the N-word, told police that Gehrke became hostile and threatened to harm him. When the manager tried to take away Gehrke’s beer glass to prevent being struck with it, Gehrke allegedly dug his fingernails into the manager’s hand and later grabbed him by the throat from behind, causing difficulty breathing.
The victim reportedly suffered visible cuts and inflammation on his hand. Officers who arrived on scene observed injuries consistent with the account and noted that Gehrke smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.
Gehrke admitted to officers that he grabbed the manager by the neck and stated he “could have killed” him, but claimed he had forgiven the manager and now considers himself “a man of God.”
If convicted on the top charge of strangulation and suffocation, Gehrke faces up to 6 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
