KENOSHA, Wis. — On September 11, American flags across Kenosha were lowered in remembrance of the terrorist attacks that struck the nation 24 years ago. A day earlier, on September 10, President Donald Trump ordered all federal buildings to fly flags at half-staff from Friday through Sunday in honor of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in Utah.

Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman, a lifelong Republican, was the first local official to confirm that county facilities would comply. Mayor David Bogdala, also a Republican, initially resisted, reportedly wary of the city’s large Democratic population, but reversed course after facing political pressure.

Meanwhile, Judge Chad Kerkman, who has styled himself as the county’s “presiding judge,” opposed lowering flags at the courthouse. Whether he yielded to his ex-wife’s authority as county executive or relented on his own remains unclear. Either way, flags at city, county, and courthouse facilities flew in unison this weekend.

In the end, the sight of lowered flags across all government levels offered a rare display of unity in Kenosha County. Political violence, officials and residents agreed in their own ways, is not acceptable. While most county board supervisors publicly condemned the assassination, neither the mayor nor any city aldermen issued statements.

Only the president, governor or congress can order the flags be flown at half-staff. Anyone flying the flag, whether on public or private property, must comply or take their flags down. It is not up to county executives, mayors, judges, business owners or private citizens.
This is not true. The president can only order Federal buildings, governor – state buildings, exec -county, mayor – city, private property – only the owner.
Sorry, to be clear It’s more a matter of respect and proper etiquette not a question of legality for private homes and businesses. And it does matter where with regard to who can order flags to be flown at half staff- I don’t see anything anywhere about local elected officials having this authority.

We’ve all seen our tax dollars used to buy gay and tranny flags to be flown; so clearly, they do what they want. I like being able to judge the establishments I go to based on their flag height this week. Half-staff tells me that are at least capable of respect. Tranny flag: never going near them.

Why are the flags that have staff anyhow. Very sad for what happened. But what about the kids that were shot in the schools. We haven’t talked about them. They’re just citizen kids. What about the kids that were shot while they were praying.

This is my favorite deflection, “but, but, what about this?!” You don’t have a good reason to hate on Kirk so you try to deflect that way because your party of choice tells you too. It really is a wonderful thing to be able to think for yourself, it’s quite refreshing. You might see that Charlie was right in his sentiments.

Pathetic that rather than just shut the f****** and say nothing you actually try and turn respect for an assassinated political figure into the exact same thing as someone shooting children in a school. Charlie Kirk was murdered because he dared to try and get people to talk and research things on their own, it was a political assassination. When children get shot in schools, do you think they’re being assassinated because someone didn’t like the way they were acting like children? Shame on you.

I thought I was the only one aware of the nuance. It is the “democrat party”, not the “democratic party”. Always has been, always will be. Followers are “democrats”, not “democratics”.

No matter how it happened, I am so glad they complied with presidential orders. My gosh, i will never understand those who glorify murdering someone they don’t agree with–I would be upset if anyone was murdered and I do not care what side of the aisle they are on.
