KENOSHA, Wis. – Two Kenosha brothers appeared in court Friday after police executed a search warrant at their home in the 8500 block of 14th Avenue and discovered multiple files of suspected child pornography on their electronic devices.
Nicholas R. Murray, 28, and Kyle P. Murray, 26, were each charged with several felony counts of possessing child pornography following a joint investigation by the Kenosha Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
District Attorney Xavier Solis requested $250,000 cash bail for each brother. But Court Commissioner William Michel II, in his usual fashion of treating child pornography cases very lightly, reduced the amounts to $40,000 for Nicholas and $50,000 for Kyle.
Kyle is scheduled to return to court October 30 for his preliminary hearing, while Nicholas is due back October 31.
Investigation
Police began investigating after the social media platform Discord reported a user account linked to Nicholas Murray for uploading illegal material involving minors. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children forwarded the tip to the Kenosha Police Department, which traced the account to the Murray residence.
Detectives executed a search warrant at the home on October 23. According to the criminal complaints, Nicholas admitted to viewing child pornography “dozens of times” on Discord and Reddit, acknowledging that he knew the content involved underage children.
Investigators also examined a cell phone belonging to Kyle Murray and found at least ten illegal files. He reportedly told officers he thought he had deleted the material years earlier after finding it on a dating site.
Charges and Penalties
Nicholas faces five counts of possession of child pornography. Kyle faces ten counts of the same offense. Each count is a Class D felony, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
If convicted on all counts, Kyle faces up to 250 years in prison, while Nicholas faces up to 125 years. Both cases are assigned to Judge Heather Iverson in Branch 3 of Kenosha County Circuit Court.
