PARIS, Wis. — A controversial proposal to construct a massive natural gas-fired power plant near the Village of Somers growth area is drawing significant public opposition as the Wisconsin Public Service Commission continues reviewing the project. No final vote or decision timeline has been announced, and the proposal remains under state review.

There’s already solar fields and an existing generating station in this area, makes sense to lessen the footprint, than on a completely blank canvas.
The new proposal is 3 times the size of the existing one. Think about the impact on the wells and air quality.
And what exactly is the existing impact on the wells and air quality from the current plant??? Been there dozens of times, so no bs’ing now.
Air pollution doesn’t work like stepping on a landmine. You don’t show up once, fall over, and die. The existing plant emits NOx and other pollutants that add to ozone and fine particulates in a county that already struggles with air quality. That damage happens over years, not during your dozen drive-bys. “I’ve been there and I’m fine” isn’t data — that’s just not how cumulative exposure, asthma, heart disease, or cancer risk works.
Stoner is a loser
Let’s build it by Stoner. KR and 22nd Ave. Sounds like a great location. Way less people affected.
That’s actually the alternative site in the picture at 172nd Ave. The proposed site is on 120th Ave next to the soon Microsoft. Think about all the workers at Amazon, Uline and Silgan breathing in the air less than 1 mile away. Increasing health costs for the rest of us. Let’s build it right where everyone lives and breathes that’s brilliant.
What a waste of prime land off interstate .
If Kenosha County wants to attract modern employers and good jobs, building a large gas-fired power plant sends the opposite message. It discourages the type of development that values clean air, workforce health, and long-term community stability.
I think we need this as well as more nuclear power. These green ideas clearly don’t work, what does are fossil fuels.
How dare you lump nuclear power in with fossil fuels. Nuclear is clean energy. Fossil fuels are dirty, polluting, and the reason we’re stuck in this mess.
There are very few “emissions” burning natural gas …..
Nuclear is definitely better ..
Very few emissions”? That’s not scientific. Natural gas plants still emit large amounts of CO₂ and methane—a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. They’re far from clean
Are you serious? Natural gas power plants are much cleaner than coal and don’t have decades of radioactive waste from nuclear. You want to see more windmills, too?
Are you serious?
Cleaner than coal is a very low bar. Natural gas still emits CO₂, methane leaks (which are far worse for warming), NOx, and fine particulates. Calling it “clean” ignores the actual science. Nuclear has contained, regulated waste — gas plants put pollution straight into the air we all breathe.
I would love to see more windmills all across the United States.
People need to stop approving all these data centers that have no viable means to power themselves. Cripes, it common sense. Seems most people think power is free, costs nothing to produce and is squeaky clean. It isn’t, unless you want to sit under a tree and bang rocks together all night to stay warm. Hard to believe people can lack critical thinking skills and make it as far as they do.
Good, we need something like this. I fully support it.
Must be written by Stoner.
Nope, written by someone with more than one brain cell. If you want all this electric and solar garbage, move to IL or CA. See how it works for them…spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
California’s grid works with solar and wind as major contributors — and reliability has improved with storage, planning, and backup systems.
“major contributor”, LOL…. one word, ‘naive’.
Renewables + zero-carbon sources now make up more than half of California’s power supply — over ~50% in 2024
Ah yes, the classic “if I don’t like it, it must not work” argument. The data tells a very different.
Except it’s the wrong fuel. Wrong decade. Let’s progress backwards.
Let’s go back to what works, love it!
Let’s add to the global warming crisis. Let’s kill off this planet sooner. This will certainly help melt the icebergs.
“global warming” … “climate change” … LOLOL …….
Science isn’t a joke—temperatures, sea levels, and extreme weather trends are all well documented. Mocking the facts doesn’t make them disappear.
Not mocking, just informed in the industry 30 years. I don’t rely on fairy tails and unicorns. I work in the real world and it isn’t powered by sunshine and pixy dust. Real sustained power is inconvenient to you, I get it. But it is necessary if you enjoy not living in the stone age.
LOL! Right! ….people still believe that nonsensical money scam?? These people drive and vote, ….scary.
Finally, a non-“Anonymous” contributor.
If you disagree with the power plant, make sure to file your public comment:

Thanks, I’ll add my kudos to the idea
Kudos based on nothing don’t carry any weight.
…as I’m sure you’ve already “Anonymous”-ly submitted your-own, probably multiple times.
I can’t wait for the photo op of Samantha Kerkman and George Stoner cutting the ribbon on the new power plant. Perfect headline:
Cutting ribbons, cutting air quality standards—for the sake of ‘progress’
She’s bad news
Selling out Kenosha County
What comes around goes around
All these developments, I bet your taxes are low.
Don’t need another one – taxes are already low enough.
There’s one being built right now on kr. The other one is off hwy e west of the interstate. Badtke owns the land. That’s what I was told. Glad I’m out in western wi. There we can keep dairy farming and not put up with all this b.s.
How is this Somer’s area if it’s way out in Paris by the dragstrip?
The one by the dragstrip is the alternative site in Paris still. The one by Badtke extending from 120th Ave to 136th Ave is the primary site that is being proposed which falls under the whole Paris Somers agreement.
Your right!!
Because they annnexed parts of Paris into kenosha and somers. My families farms are now uline. Glad I’m not there anymore we can dairy in jackson county comfortably and not worry about that crap.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about public need. It’s about bending over backwards for a single corporate data center.
Microsoft should pay for it and the decommissioning of the natural gas plant.
It’s about powering data centers. Municipality does NDA. Allow them in with no disclosure to the public. But I sure hope it is to protect residential power usage. Wisconsin residents are still on the hook for these now gone power plants. For somewhere of billions of dollars.
Stoner has shared his opinion. Lucky Somers. When will the Paris Board find its voice? Last I checked, they were elected by residents, not corporate interests.
“Yvonne Besyk of Salem criticized the proposal as a step backward from renewable energy efforts. Besyk argued building new fossil fuel infrastructure could increase long-term energy costs, undermine climate goals.”
After decades of proof to the contrary, Yvonne STILL believes in the hoax known as “man-made global warming”? Yikes! Yvonne can NOT be taken seriously for anything that she ever says.
Yvonne is right. Doubling down on fossil fuels now is a step backward—both economically and environmentally.
Coal especially anthracite coal still needed but the emissions are costly. Anthracite coal ash is used in concrete. Drywall. Binder. The sugar beet plants use it in Minnesota and North Dakota. I’ve hauled it there from Shamokin pa. In my grain trailer
Republican leaders ( Rhinos) are all behind this . County Executive , State representatives, supervisors.
None of them are here in Paris to help us . Zero …The town I can tell you is done with all of these Elected officials . Most of the these positions nobody are running against them us is my understanding. We’re stuck again . Next time will be different
