KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. — A death investigation is underway after a 49-year-old inmate was found unresponsive Sunday morning inside the downtown Kenosha County Jail, prompting emergency medical efforts and an independent investigation by an outside law enforcement agency.

According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate was discovered at approximately 8:12 a.m. inside the jail’s medical ward dorm. Jail personnel said medical staff and correctional staff immediately responded and began life-saving measures in an effort to save the man’s life.

The Kenosha Fire Department and sworn law enforcement personnel were also called to assist with the emergency response inside the facility. Despite those efforts, authorities said the inmate was pronounced dead inside the jail.

The circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death have not yet been disclosed publicly, and authorities have not released the man’s identity.

The Sheriff’s Office said that under department policy, any serious incident occurring inside a county detention facility — including an inmate death — automatically triggers an independent outside investigation. Following protocol, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and responded to the jail. The agency has now assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Zoerner also issued a public statement following the incident.

“On behalf of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” Zoerner said. “Any death in our custody is taken with the utmost seriousness. Our thoughts are with the family as they face this loss, and we remain committed to ensuring this incident is fully and independently investigated.”

Authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, whether the inmate had a medical condition, or whether additional individuals were present in the dorm area at the time of the incident.

Officials said additional information will be released when appropriate as the investigation progresses.

  1. They dont give a crap! They dont take any health issues serious! There’s probably only 2 nurses that will actually try to do something for u, the Russian/Ukrainian bitch would rather see you die before she thinks something is wrong. Very uneducated or just complete pieces of sh*t. They tell you to put in a slip, bring you down to medical, just to tell you aint nothing wrong with u n to drink more water lmao kenosha county jail health services is a joke. Inmates would be better off with a chimp running the show. No wonder this guy died in their custody.

        1. Even the pedos the that rape kids and watch child porn? They should be put down like the animals they are.

    1. The truth is these inmates come in with drug related health issues that have been going on for years. Livers shot, kidneys & heart over used. There medical staff not magicians. Then you have drug seeking individuals that fein any illness just for a chance to get in the med pass every shift/day. Can’t go a day without ingesting something…
Instead of focusing on getting clean & healthy. Just sayin’.

      19
      5
          1. Not an officer. Do you know what they say about the word a-s-s-u-m-e? Besides , what is wrong with being an officer? It’s an honest living. They make over $30 an hour just coming out of high school. And it’s one of the best pension systems in the country? I don’t see the issue?

            4
            2
            1. They do not make 30.00 hrs just coming out of high school. That would be great, but what they DO instead is they pay the high schoolers the SAME hourly wage as a guy who has been working there for several years. Now that really socks! And again, it’s NOT 30.00 an hour!

            2. Incorrect on the wage. Kenosha County is the lowest paying for Corrections. They start at 27. Whereas Lake County is almost 40, Racine over 30, State DOC about 34. Yes, the Wisconsin Retirement System is great, however, Kenosha also does not provide post Retirement health insurance meaning that officers would have to work into their mid 60s to qualify for medicare/medicaid. Google “life expectancy of a Corrections Officer”. It is 59 years old. Working for Kenosha as a Corrections Officer is a death sentence. This is why no one stays (at least the good ones that is).
So until the county executive, county board, finance committee all get on board to start caring about officers, turnover will continue to be through the roof.

              4
              1
              1. Kenosha getting rid of their retirement insurance means many of us are working long past time when it’s probably safe for us to do so.

Oh well, it’s the county’s liability insurance that will take that hit.

            3. Big A or A: I am not assuming. You outed yourself in one of your past sanctimonious comments.

You are a correctional officer. Now, you provide false information to enhance the status of your position. You really are a fraud. Maybe take a long look in the mirror before you attack other people with your cruel comments. You and the people you attack are cut from the same cloth.

              1. You could not be more incorrect but you makes you feel better to think that, it means no difference to me

              2. What am I missing? He is a correctional officer…..which is a shitty ass job. They will literally hire anyone.

                Can’t believe people take a $30 an hour job…..for a pension?

    2. Look, it’s called a hunger strike. They can control how much you eat, but not how little. They’re charged with keeping you safe and that’s also known as keeping you ALIVE. All you have to do is stop eating and make sure a white shirt documents it all. They then either have to force feed you(after a while), or try and negotiate, but probably both. That takes resolve though, willpower, moxie. Most people locked up don’t have what it takes to do that.

      1
      1
    3. Convict or not, you are right. I kept asking for my meds which both help me keep healthy and to not potentially spread a virus which I permanently had. No one gave a damn, not even the Vladmir Putin lookin ass bitch, as you said. I used to be like all the people on here who thinks “all criminals deserve to die,” or be put in a “wood chipper” or some stupid gobshite. These are the ideas of people who don’t actually know who you are, or what you’ve been through, and they do not care. Majority of people love a scapegoat and love to see other’s in pain or worse. But there is always hope, even after the greatest loses. Feelings change, people change. I do sincerely hope you’re trying to better yourself just as I am.

    1. Really? Don’t be delusional. When you add in the costs of the investigation and the litigation that always follows, it is much cheaper to keep people alive and locked up.

      6

      1. A lifetime of in and out of jail/ prison versus dieing, or keeping them healthy in prison for life
I pick letting them die to save us real humans $. Let all junkies die the life they choose.

        9
        5
        1. Wow dude, I just get the feeling you will one day regret saying that .. and yes you are anonymous and we don’t know who you are but you’ll know what you said here today and you’ll know how wrong you are for it. You don’t have to have sympathy you should be human though or at least respectable.i wonder what junkie hurt you? Was it your mom? A teacher? Your Dad?🙏 Explain how one can know what the answer is for sure to have such an opinion after reading a very vauge article? What are 10 years old because that’s what your emotional maturity sounds as if you are 10. I’m not trying to insult you just sayin- you went too far without enough fact’s like a ten year old

    2. Until the jail staff is deemed at fault and the settlement costs twice what it would have cost to simply provide adequate care for a human being.

And before you start tossing ridiculous political nicknames around— I’m more conservative than you because I’m *actually* pro-life, and realize that every single human life has the same inherent value, and it’s up to God to determine our time of natural death.

    3. “Are there no prisons, are there no work houses? The Union and the poor law, they are all in still full vigor I presume?” I think Charles Dickens was trying not to glorify such ideology.

  2. My boyfriend is in jail right now in the Kenosha dention center and since he has been there he started having health problems like beening a diabetic that he wasn’t when he went in to jail he has bad foot problems that he didn’t have and know he found out he has ring worm and as many times he writes out the medical paper they don’t do nothing for him . They treat them like dogs in a treatment warehouse to get tested or die. He is afraid of dieing in there. He what’s to be released so I can take care of him . So yes jail doesn’t care about nobody at all.

    6
    13
        1. I don’t know about anybody else but I did not read anything about perverted, creepy, sexual fantasies???

          5
          2
    1. When was the last time he had a physical or sid anything preventative health wise outside of jail? People realize in jail there’s nothing but time and all of a sudden their health is a priority and the taxpayers need to foot the bill.
You should be provided with a continuation of any care you were paying for before you were jailed. Not seek out everything wrong with you once you’re in.

  3. I don’t know the facts of this case nor does anyone else here at this time.

But I do know that the jail in our county is a huge federal lawsuit waiting to happen because of health care issues. It doesn’t matter how we feel about jail inmates, the law is clear about a sheriff’s duty, period.

    7
    4
  4. How does the law feel about people in counties that are struggling more. Go to cook county or venture just into the next city of Racine and tell me the law cares. It doesn’t. People in Kenosha cry too much

    5
    4
  5. Pro Life Tip…..do not engage in behavior which restricts your freedom and the ability to choose how to care for yourself.

    16
    3
  6. If you’re responsible for a life and you let it end on your watch—whether you’re a badge or a pusher—you’re a killer. Period.

    3
    7
  7. Legal systems distinguish based on duty of care and intent. A fentanyl dealer is prosecuted for providing an illicit, lethal substance, often under drug-induced homicide statutes. A jail guard is a state actor; deaths in custody involve “deliberate indifference” standards under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 or civil rights violations, where qualified immunity often serves as a massive barrier to accountability that a street dealer never enjoys.

    1
    1
  8. Did this happen in the jail or the detention center? The article says the downtown jail, yet shows a photo of the detention center.

  9. Losers in comments think that jail
Is a 5 star hotel stay. Dont be a criminal and nothing to worry about. Not that hard at all

    8
    3
  10. Okay 1at of all many people go to jail for minor charges including security and cops. 2nd they are have the most corrupt county in Wisconsin do the investigation I agree with the person who said they’d be better off with a monkey 🐒 handling the case. Finally there are many people in jail that are actually innocent I realize not as many as people claim but the metrics show the likelihood of someone being innocent is pretty likely. Good luck in life to you all. I pray for the souls all souls especially the damed and the desperate.
