BRISTOL, Wis. — Kenosha County residents will have one countywide opportunity this year to safely dispose of household hazardous materials, electronic waste and refrigerant-containing appliances during the county’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event scheduled for Saturday, May 30.
County Executive Samantha Kerkman announced that the free collection event will run from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Kenosha County Center, 19600 75th St. in Bristol. The program is available to residents throughout Kenosha County, including those living in the city, towns and villages. County officials said it is the only countywide hazardous waste collection date scheduled this year.
“We’re pleased to offer this no-cost, convenient opportunity for Kenosha County residents to dispose of various household waste items in an environmentally responsible way,” Kerkman said.
Officials said residents can bring a wide range of common household hazardous materials, including cleaners, aerosol cans, bug sprays, automotive fluids, oil-based paints, paint removal products, fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals and other outdoor or garden-related products.
The event will also accept electronic waste at no charge. Accepted items include desktop computers, laptops, televisions, printers, phones, keyboards, scanners, stereos, power tools and various electronic devices and accessories. Refrigerant-containing appliances including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and water heaters will also be accepted.
County officials noted that several items will not be accepted at the event, including latex paint, tires, infectious or biological waste, propane cylinders, explosives, radioactive materials, medical or pharmaceutical waste and business waste. Latex paint can be discarded with regular household garbage once it has dried completely.
The event will also coincide with a community diaper drive organized through a partnership between Waste Management and 1HOPE. Residents are encouraged to bring unopened packages of disposable diapers and wipes, which will support foster families through 1HOPE’s Foster Family Support Network.
