KENOSHA, Wis. — A 20-year-old Kenosha man died Tuesday afternoon following a crash involving a box truck and a minibike near the intersection of 60th Street and 13th Avenue, according to the Kenosha Police Department.

Initial dispatch traffic indicated that a child had been struck by a vehicle, with radio transmissions reporting a “vehicle versus child” crash and stating that the victim was lying face down in the roadway. Based on the information broadcast over emergency radio channels at the time, Kenosha County Eye and Scanner Watch of Kenosha County reported that a child was involved.

Police later determined that the victim was not a child, but a 20-year-old Kenosha man operating a small, non-street-legal minibike.

The crash was reported at approximately 12:16 p.m. Officers arrived and found the injured rider in the roadway. Police and fire personnel immediately began rendering aid before the man was transported to a local hospital. He later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

According to investigators, the minibike was traveling westbound on 60th Street. At the same time, a box truck was also traveling westbound on 60th Street and began making a northbound turn onto 13th Avenue. The minibike then collided with the truck.

Because dispatchers and responding personnel initially believed a child had been struck, Flight For Life was requested and a landing zone was established at Brass Community School. The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was also requested to the scene. Flight For Life was ultimately unable to respond due to weather conditions.

The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and has been cooperative with investigators, police said.

The Major Crash Assistance Team continues to investigate the fatal crash. No additional information about the deceased has been released.

  1. These small nonstreet legal mini bikes are always running up and down the streets driving like complete idiots in my area right in front of the police with nothing ever being done. Maybe start doing some traffic enforcement and then you don’t have to worry about scraping them off the pavement.

  2. Feel for the box truck driver, just trying to do a days work and someone doing something illegal dies at his hands. Rules are for a reason, you aren’t special. And that special feeling didn’t work out for him too well, …or anyone.

  3. I’m not surprised. Kenosha has ignored the mini bike, Electric Scooter/Bike Craze for long enough. Better get a handle on this now before we are reading a story like this every week. They are out of control . Parents are buying these for their kids and letting them ride wherever they want. and every moron that has lost his license to drive just buys a electric bike and continues to drive like a idiot. Here’s an Idea Kenosha Common Council … maybe this should be a topic of discussion at your next meeting. We need Rules and laws/regulations on these and we need the KPD to enforce them.

    31
    3
    1. Ebike issues are better fought at a state level. It’s hard to regulate e-bikes. I like the proposals that require insurance and licensing for any “ebike” that has a throttle. If you can go 20 mph+ for 20 miles without pedaling, it’s not a bike. Even if it has pedals.
Cycling is great exercise and a great way to get around. Start handing out tickets for running red lights and stop signs. Require insurance for overpowered E-bikes with a throttle.
And hey they look nerdy, but please wear a helmet. Ask any neurosurgeon what they think about riding a bike without a helmet. We don’t need a law about that, just some common sense.

      5
      2
      1. They’re already categorized and regulated by speed/power. The enforcement just has to be done on the street level by officers.

  4. Any motorized vehicle on the road should be street legal, registered and only operated by a licensed drivers(including scooters & ebikes). In the event of an accident, unauthorized vehicles/drivers are automatically at fault regardless of excuse……….just like driving impaired. On a side note, bicycles should also obey traffic law while in the roadway. How many bicyclists wear a helmet for “safety” while blowing through a stop sign?

    24
    1
    1. There’s a big difference between pedal assist Ebikes versus ones with a throttle. A catch all policy against all ebikes isn’t the solution. New Jersey is trying to force one through. A senior citizen going on a pedal assist ebike capped at 15mph is different than these emotorcycles that just have pedals to make them appear to be an Ebike. To me the its the throttle and max speed that needs to be enforced as a motor vehicle with proper insurance and registration.

On a seperate note. Don’t give kids any e-bike unless its for an adaptive purpose. Kids will never have a perception of mass or acceleration (along with their inherent dangers) if they are on an ebike.

Lastly. Helmets look nerdy. Very few look cool in them. Please wear them. They save lives and quality of lives.

      1
      1
      1. Before bike helmets were invented people had to exercise common sense, obey traffic law and pay attention. Helmets are useless for people that have no fear and run stop signs and traffic lights.

  5. Confiscate the bike when caught and crush it. There are too many out already to catch them all. Losing the bike might deter them from being stupid with it.

KPD has enough to do without chasing juvies and drunks on scooters.

    8
    3
  6. My family was just talking about a situation like this was going to happen in Kenoshalast night at a birthday party. We saw a police officer chase a 4 wheeler down the street and it had no license and wasn’t supposed to be on the road! To many electric mini scooters and people that use them don’t follow the law for traffic when using them. Weaving in and out of traffic, going through stop signs, cutting drivers off and then riding on the sidewalk where people are walking their dogs. There will be more deaths like this senseless one! The city needs to do something about this.

    13
    2
  7. Saw a young guy on a mini bike on Sheridan heading north, no tail light, not street legal. Had a back pack on…Wonder if it was the same guy. No helmet.

    9
    1
  8. Have the mayor authorize overtime to enforce all of these illegal mini bikes on 75th, 60th, 52nd, 22nd av, and the lakefront. Zero breaks.
Take them all as evidence for court.
After that happens, guess what the next topic will be? “Police are picking on people”…..

    5
    1
      1. True, but then licensed legal drivers on the road are victims of the illegal reckless operation.
Look at how many driving lanes are erased for “bike lanes” that nobody uses. Bike should have to be registered to cover the installation and maintenance of “bike lanes”.

  9. Would be too much work for KPD to do. They rather sit on 30th Ave across from old Chrysler lot and chit chat then enforce laws. Or you know sit by the outreach center and do nothing except play on there phones and talk to each other meanwhile drug deals and shit happen right Infront of them

    6
    3
      1. oh you think you can just go in and make a change, gtfoh
it’s a job with leadership telling you what to do just like anywhere else, don’t play fantasy

        1
        2
  10. When I see the adults darting in and out of traffic on e-bikes and mini bikes, the common denominator is seems to be they’re all losers who can’t afford a car, and are unemployed with no accountability for their own existence.
I’m not suggesting that in this tragedy, because I don’t know the person yet. If nobody will have to “fill his shift”, than it does apply probably.
I’m sure everyone will let us know.

    3
    3
  11. Only the first of many unless Parents start to take control and monitor when they buy them for the kid. The city creates new laws regulating their use and Law enforcement does their job and starts confiscating and prosecuting the morons breaking the law on these death traps.

    4
    1
  12. It’s about time our PD’s finest begin enforcing the rule that bicycles and all electric-powered vehicles must have lights—and that riders follow traffic laws—so licensed drivers are protected and don’t have to go home emotionally destroyed.
I know it may sound “delusional” to this PD asset, but keeping an eye on Lincoln Park at night wouldn’t hurt either.

    5
    1
      1. At some point one has to ask the question. How long is society willing to take the easy way out and, ‘new law’ itself to the point that it’ll need a police force to match the population. Or do the hard thing and stop going easy on idiots. We used to have buildings for them, now they roam free and cost society multiples. To save a fool from his folly is to populate the world with fools. And we are doing a kick azz job in that respect.

  13. I once made the mistake of calling the cops on a group of kids riding a four wheeler. They were going full speed and running stop signs. I was concerned for their safety. The cops caught them and told them to stop, no ticket or anything. I saw from my window the cop talking to both kids and parents. The next thing the cop pointed to my house. In the morning our vehicles were vandalized. Thank you KPD, LESSON LEARNED! I’ll never report anything again unless personally involved. I should have just enjoyed popcorn, watching the little angels bleed after getting hit by a car. Natural selection at its best.

    15
    1
    1. PD Boys with a badge are solid—remember, they receive commands. Now, those who pick up the phone lack training or motivation. Next time, record the call and bring it to X, or bring the issue to their sergeant’s attention or the DA’s office.

      1
      2
  14. I understand these are probably fun to ride. But there smaller size make it very difficult for drivers to see. And if they are dipping and zipping in traffic they are going to lose. There was an idiot kid riding his mini on 60th today going against the flow of traffic that almost ate the bumper on my truck and he didn’t seem phased about that at all. They are motorized vehicles that should require having a DL.

    Please be safe everybody!

    3
    1
  15. I am sorry this happened, but maybe something can be done about the proliferation of electric scooters, bikes, and minibikes on sidewalks and streets these days. These people dart in and out of traffic and have zero concern for the rules of the road. There have been several times when I have had to slam on my brakes because one of these vehicles has entered the road in front of me. These vehicles should NOT be on the road.

    3
    1
  16. 100% the person on the mini bike was not paying attention driving fast down the street acting like an idiot thinking their cool this is also how motorcyclers crash
