TWIN LAKES, Wis. — Country Thunder Wisconsin 2026 got off to a slow start as thick smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed southeastern Wisconsin, but by the end of the four-day festival, Shadow Hill Ranch was once again filled with country music fans enjoying one of the Midwest’s biggest annual music festivals.

The smoke had a noticeable impact on attendance Thursday, July 16. Large sections of the concert grounds were sparsely populated as air quality concerns kept many people away. Even some longtime attendees remarked that they had never seen opening day so quiet.

Friday showed signs of recovery. While attendance still appeared lighter than a typical Country Thunder Friday, the grounds became progressively busier as the evening wore on. By Saturday, crowds were steady throughout the day and night. It wasn’t a sellout atmosphere, but there was plenty of energy as fans packed in for another full slate of performances.

Sunday was a completely different story.

With the smoke largely gone and more favorable weather, the festival was bustling. Parking lots filled early, the campgrounds were active from morning through the evening, and concertgoers packed the main stage area for the final day of the festival.

This year’s lineup featured a mix of country music legends and rising stars. Thursday’s performers included Gavin Adcock, Gretchen Wilson, George Birge, The Wilder Blue and Mae Estes. Friday featured The Red Clay Strays, Ian Munsick, Mark Chesnutt, Zach John King, Hannah McFarland and Charlie Argo. Saturday brought Riley Green, Nate Smith, Dasha, Lonestar, The Jack Wharff Band and Jay Webb. Sunday’s finale included Keith Urban, Shaboozey, Corey Kent, Tyler Nance and Annie Bosko.

Kenosha County Eye attended performances by Lonestar, Dasha and Nate Smith on Saturday. All three put on excellent shows. Lonestar reminded fans why the band remains one of country music’s most recognizable acts, performing hit after hit with the same polished sound that has kept them popular for decades.

Dasha brought tremendous energy to the stage and clearly enjoyed interacting with fans. After her set, she spent time signing autographs for concertgoers before taking part in a country music tradition by drinking beer from one of her cowboy boots, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Nate Smith delivered one of the weekend’s most memorable performances. During his opening songs, he climbed off the stage and walked through the audience while singing, telling the crowd he wanted to perform with “his friends” rather than simply for them. The move energized the audience, with fans surrounding him as he made his way through the crowd. At one point, Smith remarked that he hoped to return to Country Thunder someday not as a performer, but as an attendee because the festival looked like too much fun to experience only from the stage.

Kenosha County Eye also stopped by briefly Sunday. Shaboozey had the crowd on its feet with a strong lineup of songs and an entertaining performance, while Keith Urban delivered exactly what fans expected from one of country music’s biggest stars. His guitar playing, vocals and connection with the audience closed out the festival in impressive fashion.

Beyond the music, Country Thunder remained the massive campground party it has become known for. Thousands of campers spent the weekend grilling, playing yard games, decorating campsites, riding golf carts and socializing with friends old and new. Music echoed throughout the campgrounds long after the final acts left the stage each night. American flags flew above campsites, generators hummed, coolers stayed stocked, and neighbors who had never met before were sharing food and drinks by the end of the weekend. For many attendees, the camping experience is just as much a part of Country Thunder as the concerts themselves.

As with any event that attracts tens of thousands of people, law enforcement maintained a strong presence throughout the weekend. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Pleasant Prairie Police Department, Twin Lakes Police Department, Kenosha Police Department and numerous other law enforcement agencies patrolled the festival grounds, campgrounds and surrounding roadways to help keep everyone safe. There were reports of criminal activity and several arrests, but nothing that appeared out of the ordinary for an event of this size.

When the music finally ended Sunday night, thousands packed up for the trip home, leaving behind one familiar reminder that the weekend had come to an end. Many campsites were littered with empty beer cans, beer bottles and other trash before cleanup crews began the enormous task of restoring the grounds for another year.

While Canadian wildfire smoke undoubtedly hurt attendance on Thursday and part of Friday, Country Thunder steadily regained momentum throughout the weekend. By Sunday, the festival looked much more like the Country Thunder fans have come to expect, ending another successful year with memorable performances, enthusiastic crowds and a strong finish despite a challenging start.
