PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. — Pleasant Prairie election officials are investigating an absentee ballot mailing mix-up after a village voter reported receiving the wrong ballot in the mail, prompting reviews by the Wisconsin Elections Commission and the United States Postal Service.
According to Village Clerk Jane C. Snell, the issue came to light on Saturday, July 18, when a Pleasant Prairie absentee voter reported receiving a City of New Berlin ballot instead of a Pleasant Prairie ballot. The voter also reported that the outer mailing envelope appeared to have been taped.
The village reported the matter to the Kenosha County Clerk, the Wisconsin Elections Commission, and the United States Postal Service for investigation.
The City of Muskego later notified Pleasant Prairie that one of its absentee voters had received a Pleasant Prairie ballot. According to the village, the ward designation on that ballot appears to match the ballot that should have been delivered to the Pleasant Prairie voter.
Village officials said the available information suggests the ballot exchange may have occurred during mail processing, but the United States Postal Service will determine how the mix-up occurred. Election officials from the affected municipalities are working with the USPS to review the incident and ensure the affected voters receive the correct ballots and are able to vote in accordance with Wisconsin law.
The village is asking any absentee voter who believes they received the wrong ballot or experienced another issue with their absentee mailing to contact their municipal clerk immediately.
