Racine Officer Shoots Armed Suspect During Home Invasion: Investigation Underway

Racine, Wis. — An officer with the Racine Police Department shot and injured a suspect during a tense encounter inside a residence Tuesday night following a reported armed home invasion. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of Hamilton Street and has triggered an outside investigation, officials confirmed.

According to a news release from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, Racine officers responded to the scene on April 22 after receiving reports of a home invasion involving a firearm. Upon arrival, officers reportedly heard gunshots coming from inside the home. When they entered the residence, they encountered an armed individual. During the confrontation, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody with what authorities described as a minor injury. No officers or civilians were harmed during the incident.

In accordance with protocol, the Kenosha-Racine Area Investigative Team (KRAIT) was called in to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office is leading that probe. Meanwhile, the Racine Police Department continues to investigate the underlying home invasion.

All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice during such reviews.

  1. Sad that they even have to investigate this. Several RED states allow you to shoot an intruder on the spot, regardless if you feel your life is in danger, or of the criminal is armed or not.

  3. In this instance if you’re a cop you never really know what you’re heading into and when someone’s shooting at you or pointing a gun at you, it’s called self defense! There should be no investigation.
