WHEATLAND, Wis. — A 24-year-old Wheatland woman was arrested Wednesday after authorities say she choked, punched, and threatened her mother while intoxicated — all while locking herself in a room with her toddler.
According to a criminal complaint, Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Highway 83 in the Town of Wheatland at about 11:39 a.m. on Aug. 13 for a report of a family disturbance. The caller, identified as the victim, told deputies her daughter, Autumn R. Hecketsweiler, had returned home from a night of drinking, appeared highly intoxicated, and refused to let her 22-month-old child out of her locked bedroom.
The woman told deputies she tried to get the door open to care for the child, but Hecketsweiler eventually came out and rushed at her. Investigators say Hecketsweiler shoved her mother into a wall, put her in a choke hold from behind, and punched her in the head eight to ten times. One punch allegedly knocked her mother’s glasses off and broke a lens, causing damage estimated at a couple hundred dollars. The victim also reported pain from hair-pulling and from being slammed into the wall.
Photographs taken by deputies showed redness on the victim’s neck and chest, a scratch on her arm, and other visible injuries. Deputies said Hecketsweiler repeatedly made derogatory remarks about her mother during transport to the Kenosha County Jail, including threatening statements suggesting further harm.
Prosecutors have charged Hecketsweiler with felony strangulation and suffocation, along with misdemeanor counts of battery, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct. All charges carry domestic abuse enhancers. The felony strangulation and suffocation charge carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
In court Thursday, cash bail was set at $1,500. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21.
