An extremist Kenosha man who is out of jail on bail awaiting trial for multiple charges, has announced he is seeking election to an open seat on the Kenosha City Council. Joel Paul Trudell, who was captured on multiple video recordings devices resisting arrest with violence against two Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputies, made the announcement this week. On the paperwork, he lists KUSD as his employer

Trudell’s Arrest

The Kenosha County Board met on June 21, 2022 and started out as it normally does. Citizens are allowed to address the Board members to voice their opinions in a section of the meeting titled “Citizen Comments.” Some Kenosha residents are more than upset at the red wave that hit the County Board. The Kenosha County Democratic Party, lead by failed senate candidate Lori Hawkins (D) and Jodi Meurhoff (D) rallied liberals from all over the county to oppose a measure that would end a decade-long prohibition against concealed carry in certain county buildings. They didn’t seem to expect, however, the many speakers that showed up to support the measure. Local activist Joel Trudell is frequently called a “troll” and is commonly seen at board meetings acting “off.” He was especially upset that evening, because the board was expected to end the prohibition on concealed carry.  Trudell is married to Kenosha Attorney Kate Trudell of Johnson Bank, who is also a local liberal activist. Trudell was visibly mocking speakers that spoke in favor of the removal of the “no guns signs” at certain county buildings. He was admonished and warned several times during the first 10 or so speakers.

Chairman Nudo at first was very patient with Trudell, warning him to be respectful of other taxpayers. Eventually it was Trudell’s turn to speak. He went off topic and started verbally attacking members of the board by name, questioning why they accepted campaign contributions, which is normal in elections. Trudell started to get uncivil and disorderly, by raising his voice and shouting. He then verbally attacked a resident who passed him while getting in line to speak. He received another warning from Nudo. “I’ll get to you next Nudo!” Trudell shouted. After ignoring the Chairman’s repeated warnings, Nudo ordered Trudell to be removed from the podium. Two Kenosha Deputies politely asked Trudell to back away from the podium. Instead, Trudell refused verbally and clutched the podium saying “I’m not leaving. I am speaking!” Deputies repeatedly gave Trudell verbal commands that he ignored. The struggle ended up on the ground and Trudell continued to fight with the deputies. Three off duty police officers, KPD Officers Tyler Cochran, and Albert “Bryan” Gonzales and then-KSD Sgt. Dave Zoerner all rushed in to help as Trudell was still physically resisting. The meeting was abruptly adjourned and none of the evening’s business was handled.

The following people emailed Kenosha DA Graveley (D) and asked him not to charge Trudell:

Lori Hawkins (Kenosha County Democratic Party Chairman)
Jodi Muerhoff (Kenosha County Democratic Party Secretary)
Tanya Kitts Lewinski (Kenosha Teachers Union President)
Holly Kangas (Kenosha Alderman)
Tenille Kangas-Isome-Fick-Thornton (Signed Kenosha YMCA Member Engagement Director) Daughter of Alderman Holly Kangas
Ronald Stevens (Former boys and Girls Club Director)
Laura Marran (Kenosha.com)
Nina Ferraro (Liberal Activist)
Mary Manthei (2 Emails)
Sam Roochnik
Amanda Townsend
Kaylynn Steinmetz
Stacy Moore
Sue Benning
David Rinke
Marieta “Marie” Huff
Helen Breitenbach
Amy Feret
Amy Brothen
Toni Hanson

Graveley responded to most of the people saying “The Kenosha DA’s Office will continue to try to be neutral referees in these incredibly partisan, tribal times.”

After telling KCE that he had no conflict and will personally handle the case, he then kicked the case to Walworth County DA Zeke Wiedenfeld who charged Trudell. Trudell is being represented by far-left extremist, William Sulton who is the Wisconsin ACLU’s President. It is unknown if Sulton approached Trudell to take the case pro-bono.

Let’s take a look at the Wisconsin Jury Instructions for the elements the prosecutors would have to prove to get guilty verdicts:

Resisting an Officer

  1. The defendant resisted an officer. A deputy Sheriff is an peace officer. To resist an officer means to oppose the peace officer by force or threat of force. The resistance must be directed to the officer personally.
  2. The Deputy was doing an act in an official capacity.
  3. The Deputy was acting with lawful authority.
  4. The defendant knew that the deputy was an officer acting in an official capacity and with lawful authority and that the defendant knew (his) conduct would resist the officer.

The video footage and sworn testimony of the two deputies would be more than enough to satisfy a jury beyond a reasonable doubt as to these three elements.

Disorderly Conduct

  1. The defendant engaged in (violent) (abusive) (indecent) (profane) (boisterous)(unreasonably loud) (or otherwise disorderly) conduct.
  2. The conduct of the defendant, under the circumstances as they then existed, tended to cause or provoke a disturbance.

This one is easier to prove to a jury. There were at least 4 minors in the room. They were high school students that participate in the “Youth in Governance” program that teaches kids how government is supposed to work. Unfortunately for theses students, they saw a 43-year-old-man fight police and drop “f bombs.”

William Sulton and Joel Trudell In Court Earlier This Year
(File Photo by Kevin Mathewson, Kenosha County Eye)

Kenosha County Eye has been granted press credentials for the upcoming trial of Joel Trudell. Trudell faces one year behind bars minus any time for good behavior for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges. KCE has covered this case from the date of the arrest. I was there and photographed it. If Trudell and his lawyer get their way, KCE won’t be able to cover the trial. They don’t have a good argument to keep us out, so they are trying to use a loophole.

Trudell’s attorney subpoenaed me today to testify in the trial. I was a witness in my capacity as a journalist, but so were 50 other people. The prosecutor in this case, Zeke Wiedenfeld (D), didn’t subpoena me because it doesn’t make sense. It’s a simple case. Was Trudell disorderly and did he resist arrest? It was captured on at least three video cameras. In a text to me earlier this year, Sulton said that he will be asking the Judge to exclude me from the courtroom during testimony. This is called “excluding witnesses” and is used so that witnesses’ memories aren’t tainted by other people’s testimony. T. Clair Binger tried this trick during the Rittenhouse trial. He put me on the witness list, even though I was 15 miles away during the shootings. He wanted me out of the courtroom.

  10. Mr. Trudell has the right to seek public office if he qualifies. Even if convicted of misdemeanors he can still seek and hold office if the voters of his district choose to elect him. Kevin has done his best to make the case why that shouldn’t happen but in the end it’s the voters who call the shots.

As a conservative, I will defend Mr. Trudell’s right to seek and hold office and also that of the people making the case why he shouldn’t be elected. Our Constitution becomes meaningless if it’s only for the people and ideas we like. Real conservatives not only get this but live and breathe it. CINO’s don’t.

    1. No one is saying he can’t run. People are saying he is unfit, and an embarrassment, which is also their right to as well. When you publicly bash police, government and make fun of citizens on Facebook and other platforms, you are a tool, troll and an embarrassment. Which is what everyone thinks of Joel. Being a conservative you should know that, but your comment seems more liberal and that of a hypocrite
