KENOSHA, Wis. — A 34-year-old Kenosha man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly breaking into his father’s shed, stealing a lawnmower, and later scrapping his father’s vehicle for $150.
Chase A. Zanin was formally charged Friday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with burglary of a building or dwelling, misdemeanor theft, and criminal damage to property. Court Commissioner William Michel II set Zanin’s cash bail at $1,500. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 8.
According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Pleasant Prairie Police Department responded to a report from Zanin’s father, Mark Zanin, who alleged that his son had unlawfully entered his shed while he was out of state between June 16 and June 26. Mark stated the padlock had been broken and a lawnmower, valued at $150, was missing. He told officers he never gave Chase permission to access the shed or take the equipment.
When confronted by text, Chase allegedly replied, “I’m out of town. I’ll fix the door, made money today. I’ll fix it n pay u back sorry.” He claimed the shed was unlocked and said he had borrowed the lawnmower because it was more powerful than his own.
Mark also told police that Chase had been allowed to drive a 2010 Honda CRV that remained titled in Mark’s name. He said Chase called him on June 25 and admitted to selling the vehicle for $150 without his permission.
Investigators later confirmed the vehicle had been sold to Finishline Towing. The buyer told police that Chase claimed to have the title, but later failed to produce it.
When officers arrived to question Chase at his residence, he reportedly closed the garage door upon seeing them but eventually emerged and admitted to taking both the lawnmower and the car.
If convicted, Zanin faces up to 12 years and 6 months in prison for the burglary charge, plus additional time and fines for the theft and property damage counts.
