Salim Barkho, 58, was arrested July 7 and posted the $300 statutory cash bail. He appeared in court Thursday for his initial appearance, where the single misdemeanor charge was read.
According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a dispute at a rental property Barkho owns on the 1000 block of 75th Street. A 16-year-old boy told officers he had come to help his family move out when Barkho allegedly confronted him with a hammer, challenged him to “hit me,” and raised the tool as if to strike. The teen said Barkho then retrieved a large fixed-blade knife from his car and stood within a foot of him, holding the knife unsheathed at his side while continuing to yell.
The teen’s sister corroborated the account and said she feared for her brother’s safety. She claimed Barkho also pointed the hammer toward her and later retrieved the knife, prompting her to pull her brother away.
Police reviewed cell phone video and recovered both weapons, which were positively identified by the teen. Barkho denied making threats but gave inconsistent statements and reportedly acted erratically when questioned by police.
He is due back in court on August 7.
