ELKHORN, Wis. — Congressman Bryan Steil on Tuesday recognized Burlington resident Sam Porter, an emergency department nurse serving at both Aurora St. Luke’s Hospital and Aurora Lakeland Medical Center, as Wisconsin’s First Congressional District’s 2025 Health Care Worker of the Year.
Steil presented the award during a visit to Elkhorn, praising Porter’s professionalism and dedication. He noted that Porter has earned the respect of both colleagues and patients for her consistent willingness to help others, whether inside the emergency department or in the community at large. Steil said her selflessness and commitment to putting patients first set an example for health care workers across the region.
Porter was nominated for her record of providing life-saving and compassionate care to every patient she encounters in the emergency department. According to the Congressman’s office, the selection was made by the district’s Health Care Advisory Board, a panel made up of medical professionals from across Southeast Wisconsin.
The board chose the recipient based on service, dedication, and selflessness — with nominees required to live in the district and hold a professional health care license. Porter was recognized for exceeding expectations in each category.
This year marks the sixth annual presentation of the First Congressional District Health Care Worker of the Year Award.
