PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. – A 17-year-old Pleasant Prairie resident is facing two felony charges after allegedly fleeing police on an ATV through a crowded shopping center parking lot on a Saturday afternoon.
Waylon M. Ware was charged Tuesday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with first-degree recklessly endangering safety and fleeing or eluding an officer. Court Commissioner William Michel II ordered $10,000 cash bail and scheduled a preliminary hearing for July 18.
According to the criminal complaint, Pleasant Prairie Police Officer Daniel Moorehouse was on patrol around 4:45 p.m. on July 12 when he saw a black ATV being illegally operated on a public roadway near 76th Street and West Road. When Moorehouse attempted a traffic stop, the driver—later identified as Ware—stood up on the ATV, looked back at the squad car, and sped away.
The complaint says Ware fled at high speed, ignoring stop signs and weaving through side streets before entering the congested parking lot of the Shoppes at Prairie Ridge. Surveillance video reviewed by police allegedly showed the ATV driving recklessly through the area and repeatedly looking back to locate the pursuing officer. Officer Moorehouse ultimately terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns but documented the ATV’s speed exceeding 40 mph through the commercial area.
Investigators say three prior ATV complaints in the neighborhood were associated with Ware. Officer Moorehouse visited the teen’s home, where Ware’s father confirmed that his son owned an ATV and identified him in a surveillance screenshot.
Ware was later arrested at his workplace. During transport, he reportedly told the officer he fled because he didn’t want his ATV to be towed.
If convicted, Ware faces up to 12 years and six months in prison for the reckless endangerment charge and an additional six years for fleeing police. His driver’s license would also be revoked for six months under state law.
