CUSH: The Kenosha Pharisees – Opinion

The face of religion is changing.  No one likes to talk about it, least of all those who are religious.  But it’s undeniable that churches of all denominations have been slowly shifting toward the left side of the political spectrum.  Some of them do so due to public pressure, some of them do so due to changes in leadership.  If you ever questioned the power of petition, fear, or evil, look no further than the about-face of religion.  Local churches like Kenosha’s First Church United Methodist held a “Trans-Remembrance Day” last month, and the Pope of the Catholic Church himself expressed his acceptance of same-sex marriage.  He then gave a loquacious and evasive response when pressed about whether the doctrine of Catholicism should be changed.  However, it would seem the pendulum may have swung as far to the left as it’s going to go, and is beginning to reverse course.

Congregations United to Serve Humanity (CUSH) has recently been the subject of discussion because their previous support from the Catholic Church has been denounced.  CUSH used to focus mostly on important issues like homeless housing and food security and claims to be non-partisan, but in recent years has shifted its focus drastically to politics. As just a few examples, CUSH has recently encouraged their followers to attend school board meetings to support left-wing actions, and have been involved in county government issues by attempting to influence who would sit on the Racial and Ethnic Equity Commission.  It may have started as a worthwhile humanitarian effort, but has morphed into a hugbox for liberal zealots who push a political agenda under the guise of care and kindness.  CUSH is “surprised and concerned” about their withdrawal.  I am not formally religious, but it makes perfect sense to me why many churches, whose purpose is to serve the community in the way their God intended, would not care to engage with them further.

The idea that a church cannot be a loving and inclusive environment if they do not readily encourage every lifestyle that humanity can drum up is absurd, and at this point, it’s tiresome.  Ho hum, woe to ye who is not seen with favor by all of God’s creation.  It’s unfortunate, but the actuality of our current society is that most people simply are not able to accept that they may be damaging their own life and the lives of others around them with their actions.  It doesn’t matter how loving and supportive the critic may be, people will continue to refuse help in favor of temporary comfort.  No addict wants an intervention and no employee wants a bad review.  No liberal wants to be told “that’s not actually going to help people,” and no conservative wants to be told “you can’t do that.”  The world is full of damaged and broken people, and everyone believes it’s the other guy.  All of us are averse to criticism, even if it is helpful and important for us to hear it.  There is an entire book about this subject; it is called the Bible.

It would seem as though the leaders of CUSH are in need of a shepherd’s crook to get them back on track, but I suspect they would reject that notion.  Personally, I find it appropriate that the biblical figure of Cush was the father of Nimrod, given that this particular organization now seems to consistently give credence to a load of nimrods.  CUSH is also nested as a member of an umbrella organization called the Gamaliel Foundation.  Gamaliel was a Pharisee—you may recall the story of Jesus flipping tables because of their hypocrisy and immoral behavior.  After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Gamaliel was also the pharisee who told the apostles to cease speaking in the name of Jesus because he was already dead.  If you didn’t know that Cush or Nimrod were in the Bible, or perhaps thought that Gamaliel was the name of an app for your phone, perhaps that is a good sign to do some reading of your own and stop listening to what any organization tells you to believe about religion or what constitutes goodness

  1. If you or someone you know still attends a catholic or methodist church, you may wanna read this? To me, it’s been very obvious for quite some time now, that the catholic church is a complete mess! If you wanna bring your kids or grandkids, up in this world learning about and believing in God, and his son Jesus, our “savior” the way that they should be brought up, that’s awesome! However, you may wanna steer away from these denominations?! They are not following the Bible like a true Christian church does!!! End of story period! Fact! ❤️ The Bible even warns about false religions/cults, false prophet’s. All things considered though, it comes down to “common sense”!!! Thanks, Mr. Common Sense 🧐

    1. You… you know that Catholics are responsible for writing the Bible, right?! The Apostles were the OG Catholics, St. Peter the first Pope?! That Jesus himself founded Catholicism and other denominations (read: PROTESTants) cherry-picked what they wanted to believe and then decided to form their own religions?!

The Catholic Mass- the One, True Mass, is biblical. If you don’t believe it, you can’t get to Heaven. Jesus lays out exactly what is required to get to Heaven, and the *ONLY* faith that can offer true salvation is Catholicism. It’s not just my opinion, either. It’s BIBLICAL. John 6:53-59, John 20:19-24

      1. The Catholic church has changed from what it once was. That cannot be denied! A Christian religion follows the Bible front to back. You show me where in the Bible that it says gay marriage is ok! Today’s Catholic church recognizes and accepts gay marriage. That’s wrong! Besides for the fact that it is SICK! Still, anyone can achieve eternal life in heaven by simply repenting and accepting Jesus as their savior! It’s all about the cross! The bottom line is that the catholic church of today is horribly wrong! They are nothing more than a big business!!! Thanks, Mr. Common Sense

        1. A few misled bishops and cardinals is not the whole Catholic Church. As a matter of fact, Kenosha has a large, thriving, traditional and reverent Catholic population, with choices of TLM’s. Don’t mistake a few individuals for the whole Church.

          9
          10
        2. Where in the Holy Bible does it state that one must only follow the Holy Bible? It doesn’t. Sola Scriptura (bible alone) is a Protestant creation 1500+ years after the Catholic Church was founded by Christ.

          1. You’re obviously not very educated in Christianity and I can tell you’re wanting to be argumentive. I’d be willing to bet you’re a liberal but that’s beside the point. Enjoy your day. Very sincerely, Mr. Common Sense

              1. I really wish all the anonymous would at least do Anonymous 1 Anonymous 2 (like Thing One and Thing Two)…at least we would know which Anonymous was posting 😂

              2. Not in the beginning they weren’t. In today’s sick society they are very compatible. Thanks for your input. Very sincerely, Mr. Common Sense

              3. “In today’s sick society.”

No, still not compatible. People are just cherry-picking which parts of Catholicism they want to follow and believe.

Liberalism and Catholicism are NOT compatible, Catholicism as a whole has not changed. Magisterium & Catechism are unchanged. Instead of spewing nonsense such as the Catholic Church allowing gay marriage, I would urge you to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read the actual standpoint. Please stop spewing Fake News.

      2. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Classic Scofield nonsense. What religion was it that had bible study in Wisconsin public schools outlawed? Do us all a favor an put the Talmud down. It’s noting more than a collection of opinions and revisions. Kinda like what you were just spewing.

        Repent sinner!

      3. In fact they false prophets and cults. You miss the whole point. Religion is man made and man corrupts everything he touches. It’s about putting your faith in Jesus Christ for your salvation not the Catholic Church or your so called “holy father” the pope and not any religion.
        1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Not religion or religious leaders. Seek God’s face through His Word alone and He will reveal Himself to you.

      4. Thanks for reminding me why I left the Catholic church ! I went to Catholic grade school for 8 years . They constantly told us we were better than everyone else . Guess what ? They lied . At least I was never molested by a pedophile priest.

      5. Wrong. 1 Tim 3:4-5 has the qualifications for Gods church, and the silly cult of the Popes religion is disqualified by those requirements.

    2. The Catholic Church is indefectible, but like all organizations, it is affected by poor leadership and bad popes, which we are undergoing now. Faithful Catholics would never give up their Faith due to a bad pope because we know this is the Faith brought for by Jesus Christ Himself.
By the way, Cush is another name for the civilization of Kush, which is what became Egypt – a symbol of Hell.

      8

    3. You are exactly right when scripture talks to us about the wolves in sheep clothing These are the people of whom it speaks. They are servants of Satan and the antichrist.

      1
      1
      1. And they’re everywhere. Robin Vos is a perfect example. Presents himself as Catholic, yet leads a life that speaks the opposite. Multiple marriages, divorces, affairs. Unwilling to fight for pre-born babies.

        5
        1
        1. Are you the same as the other Anonymous?
You’re both idiots. Can’t you come up with a fake name like the rest of us ?

    1. Only because they claim that Jesus was killed by Jews. That is true of course. But Jesus himself was a Jew. That just happened to be the people who were involved. It’s not anti-Semitism.

  2. Rot and some form of corruption eventually finds it’s way into most any organization and religion is not immune.
For many religion usually consists of like minded individuals–a congregation–that derive comfort and security socializing with others which can be beneficial. I always rated annual festivals and other such events as critical to gathering the flock for social interaction.
Unfortunately as any organization grows it becomes difficult for leadership to keep tabs on things and in most cases rules and regulations get diluted to please as many people as possible. In some cases people who have ulterior motives infiltrate the congregation. Some might say the Catholic church has suffered from leadership problems for decades along with watering down it’s ideology to keep everyone happy and willing to lighten their wallets to support agendas that often time conflict with the Church’s core beliefs.
Religion is just like any other consumer product. Shop around for whatever fits you best. No use sticking with a product like the Catholic Church if it is just going to aggravate you or in the case of the Milwaukee Archdiocese support far left dip-shits. Best way to teach them a lesson is withhold your hard earned money from supporting their scam.

    4
    2
  3. It’s sometimes difficult to separate the wheat from chaff. There are many good points in the original post but a few concerns, too.

The Church isn’t conservative or liberal — it’s the church — and Jesus was the ultimate rabble rouser of his day. Pope Francis didn’t give evasive answers. Catholic theology and writings often seem that way, though. What he said is that neither he — or us — has the capacity to sit in the shoes of Jesus and judge. He did not change Catholic theology or say that it changed. What he said — in the spirit of hate the sin but love the sinner — is that pastors should be pastoral and leave judgment to God.

With those clarifications out of the way, Mr. Fleming is correct that CUSH does not necessarily represent Christian values. This also gets a bit tricky as CUSH is an interfaith organization so its positions will not always track Catholic theology. The issue for Archbishop Listecki was that some of what CUSH was doing was so repugnant to Catholic teaching that he pulled the plug on archdiocesan support and directed parishes and staff not to participate in CUSH activities. Individual Catholics remain free to do so but are encouraged to limit involvement to those activities that do not offend church teachings.

The sad part about it is that CUSH or organizations like it could do a lot of good to alleviate social ills in a community and in so doing probably would not run afoul of Catholic teaching, either. The ELCA Outreach Center is an example of front-line services to the needy in the community and Catholics have long been involved with this Lutheran organization. The Salvation Army is, of course, a religious organization but nothing prohibits Catholics from participating in its ministries to the needy. Simply stated, CUSH overstepped its bounds in the archbishop’s views and he correctly pulled the plug on official Catholic support or participation.

    7
    1
    1. I’m the surface, you sound reasonable, but the only thing cush would really do in the long term was help the country spiral into complete uselessness. They could never be a real part of a Catholic congregation and the help they did was no different than a Hell’s Angels Christmas toy run, keeping up appearances while doing their real work in the background. Cush is welcome to register as a political organization and support whomever they want, but not hiding in sheep’s clothing as a religious group

      2
      1
  4. CUSH is nothing but a bunch of self engrandinzing lefty idiots hell bent on making themselves feel better….about themselves! There positions are often idiotic and harmful. In a world of limited resources everything cannot be provided to everyone. As an example, CUSH has supported truly dumb things like more bus service as Kenosha buses drive around all day virtually empty. If CUSH really cared they would advocate for less bus service while deploying resources to more beneficial causes. This is but one example of the stupidity of those in CUSH. But hey, as long as they can pat themselves on the back, that’s all that matters!

    1. Actually transit improvement was part of the community needs assessment especially with regards to Meijer, Prime Outlets, Uline and Amazon. It was also backed by KABA and the Chamber.

  5. These people are doing the works of the synagogue of Satan. (John 8:44, Revelation 2:9, Revelation 3:9)
    Everything they spew is Talmudic.
    Isa.5
[20] Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

    7
    1
  6. Jesus’s mother Mary foretold at Fatima there would be an apostasy which we are now in. She also foretold that Satan is in the highest levels of the Magisterium. The Catholic Church is undergoing its purification right now and more is to come. There will be a schism in time and churches will close and be sacked, which is already happening. But Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail over his church. God is ALWAYS in control. Stay true to the faith: know your Bible and Catechism and pray because Satan knows his time is limited and he will stop at nothing…especially attacking the family.

    5
    3
  7. The catholic church preaches a works based gospel which is not supported by scripture. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone.

    4
    4
  8. Hopefully Faithful Catholics who belong to St. Mary and St. Mark are carefully examining their consciences and deciding to attend Mass and donate their dollars elsewhere. Kenosha is fortunate to have so many reverent parishes that treat the Holy Mass with the respect it deserves. Racine County does not have a single one.

    1. Actually transit improvement was part of the community needs assessment especially with regards to Meijer, Prime Outlets, Uline and Amazon. It was also backed by KABA and the Chamber.

    2. Too many Catholics forget the part about being Christian. Pope Francis said our parishes must be hospitals for sinners as opposed to monuments to saints.

      2
      1
      1. Too many Catholics forget that when we’re at Mass, we’re standing at the foot of the cross. It’s a place for reverence and respect, not rainbow flags, showboating, and applause.

        4
        1
        1. Too many so-called Catholics don’t read the Bible. Psalm 150:

          Praise God in his holy sanctuary;
give praise in the mighty dome of heaven.
Give praise for his mighty deeds,
praise him for his great majesty.
Give praise with blasts upon the horn,
praise him with harp and lyre.
Give praise with tambourines and dance,
praise him with strings and pipes.
          Give praise with crashing cymbals,
          praise him with sounding cymbals.
          Let everything that has breath
          give praise to the Lord!e
          Hallelujah!

I agree that the rainbow flag as a political statement is over the top. But reverence isn’t necessarily what so-called Catholics say it is.

          1
          1
  9. And how many commenters worship Trump also? Where is he in your special bible?

Jesus never said to turn his words into a money grubbing cult and quote an old storybook as his “word”. Nor is religion meant to be political. That’s why we have separation of church and state…. so people can live without crackpots pushing ideas down their throats.

Live your own life and let others do the same. If you think you’re important, go find that mirror. You’re the same as everyone else. Improve yourself and leave others alone.

    3
    3
    1. Ah there it is. I knew Trump had to be involved in this somehow. Him and those pesky Russians. Nevermind CUSH, it was Trump that held a drive to put pornographic books in the hands of kids!!

      5
      1
    2. Trump Deranged Syndrome by a delusional Lib that actually thinks the words Separation of Church and State are in the US Constitution.

      3
      1
      1. Separation of church and state is a decision made by the MAJORITY in this country who do not want religious cults interfering in our business and our lives.

Worship what you want. Leave others out of it. No one wants to hear your ramblings about dead people and a storybook.

BTW, did you know…. the Catholic religion is not the biggest religion? Google what is…. expand your mind from Fox news and Facebook.

        1
        3
        1. Christianity remains the largest religion in the world. Catholicism is the original Christianity, and remains the single largest Christian religion.
