KENOSHA, Wis. — A homeless man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing a $140 bottle of whiskey, brandishing a knife, and attempting to spit on a police officer during his arrest Saturday night.
Cristian San Pedro Lopez, 33, was formally charged Monday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with felony discharge of bodily fluids at a public safety worker, along with three misdemeanors: retail theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and disorderly conduct.
Kenosha police were dispatched to the Mobil station at 49th Street and Sheridan Road around 8 p.m. on July 26 for a report of a retail theft involving an intoxicated man. Officers located Lopez, who matched descriptions from multiple callers and a bar employee who had followed him from Shenanigans, a downtown liquor bar.
According to the complaint, Lopez was identified by two Shenanigans employees as the man who had stolen a bottle of Rare Character whiskey. One employee described Lopez as hostile and aggressive, saying he threatened staff and accused them of racism.
A search of Lopez’s bag allegedly turned up the stolen bottle. Officers also say they found a metal pipe with burnt residue, suspected to be a crack pipe, a canister of pepper spray, and a steak knife hidden in his waistband.
While being transported to jail, Lopez reportedly banged his head on the patrol car window, screamed in Spanish, and attempted to spit on Officer Shupryt through the squad’s divider. Some of the saliva reportedly passed through the partition. Once at the jail, Lopez continued spitting on the inside of the squad car.
Court Commissioner William Michel II set cash bail at $10,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 1.
