A Kenosha man is in jail today holding on $20,000 cash bail after police and prosecutors say he led police on a high speed chase with a child in the back of his car. Alandus M. Grandberry, 40, of Kenosha, was in court today and charged with many crimes for three different incidents. The charges include felony intimidation of a victim, felony strangulation, felony false imprisonment, felony fleeing from police, second degree recklessly endangering safety, obstructing an officer, disorderly conduct, two counts of domestic battery and two counts of disorderly conduct – domestic abuse. In all, he faces almost 40 years in the Wisconsin Prison System.

According to the criminal complaint:

Grandberry’s girlfriend, and the mother of his child, called police on December 17, 2022. She reported that the defendant had headbutted her in front of other family members at their home in Kenosha. He then threatened to “blow everybody down” as he left the house. The victim took that to mean that Grandberry was going to get a gun. When police arrived at the residence, Grandberry was gone. The victim, however told police about another incident that occurred on December 10, 2022. She said that on this day, the defendant pushed her into the wall and slapped her face, calling her vulgar names. He told her that she “belonged to [him].” She tried to leave the house, but he wouldn’t let her, physically blocking the doorway. She then grabbed the phone to call police, but he took it away and then strangled her, and picked her up and slammed her to the ground. This slam made her dizzy.

On January 16, 2023 a Kenosha Police Officer was on patrol and recognized Grandberry and knew there was probable cause to arrest him for domestic-related charges. Officer Niesen then attempted a traffic stop on Grandberry. It was at this time that Niesen noticed that there was a 17-month-old girl in the back of Grandberry’s car. She then explained to Grandberry that he was under arrest for the previous incidents. A backup officer arrived and the two tried to get Grandberry out of the vehicle, but he refused, saying “I’m not going to jail.” Grandberry then sped off at a high rate of speed. More officers also arrived. Eventually, seeing the risk to the public, Officer Niesen asked her colleagues to terminate the pursuit. “There is a little girl in the back,” she can be heard saying over the police scanner. The officers then went back to Grandberry’s home and the neighbors signaled that he was there. Grandberry asked a neighbor to “help [him] hide.” Kenosha SWAT responded and made entry. Using specialized equipment, Kenosha Police finally located the suspect in the attic under some insulation. He was arrested without further incident.

In court today was Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Drew Burgoyne who asked for a high cash bond, detailing Grandberry’s extensive criminal history that we reported yesterday. Sadly, the victim sent a letter to the DA’s office asking for the charges to be dropped. Circuit Court Commissioner Larry Keating agreed with the DA’s office and set cash bond at $25,000. He barred contact with the victim. Grandberry is expected back in court on January 24, 2023 at 9:30 am for a preliminary hearing.
