PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. – A 51-year-old Pleasant Prairie man accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman has been released from jail after posting the statutory $550 cash bail the same day he was arrested. Pleasant Priaire Police referred the case to the Kenosha DA’s Office as a fourth degree sexual assault.
Jay P. Sokolovsky was formally charged Thursday with fourth-degree sexual assault and two counts of disorderly conduct, both as acts of domestic abuse. According to the criminal complaint, the primary incident occurred Tuesday morning, July 8, when Sokolovsky allegedly entered a bathroom where the 19-year-old victim had just showered and proceeded to touch her without consent.
The victim, who recently gave birth and was staying at the home of her boyfriend’s mother on 3rd Avenue, told police that Sokolovsky—identified as the mother’s boyfriend—entered the bathroom under the pretense of offering her clothes, then unhooked her bra, removed her underwear, and touched her genitals. The victim said she froze due to past trauma, but when she voiced her discomfort, Sokolovsky stopped and left the room.
She also told officers that Sokolovsky followed her into an adjacent bedroom, made inappropriate sexual comments, and touched her again in a suggestive manner. She said he had behaved inappropriately in the past and suspected he had been “grooming” her.
A male witness told police he recorded part of a phone conversation in which Sokolovsky admitted to “making a move” on the teenager. That audio was reportedly played for investigators.
Sokolovsky was arrested Wednesday and posted the $550 statutory bail later that day. He appeared in court Thursday, when the charges were filed. The second disorderly conduct charge was from an earlier incident on June 2, in which Sokolovsky allegedly threatened to kill the victim’s boyfriend, who is also a listed witness.
KCE spoke with a Kenosha Defense attorney who said that the DA’s office might have some trouble with this case becuase the defendant allegedly stopped when she told him to. She allegedly didn’t say no before the bedroom encounter and he stopped.
Sokolovsky is due back in court for a pretrial appearance on September 17.
If convicted of the most serious charge, Sokolovsky faces up to nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
