(Kenosha County Sheriff)
BRISTOL, Wis. — A 38-year-old Illinois man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly resisting arrest and kicking a sheriff’s deputy following a rollover crash in the Village of Bristol.
Fidel Juarez Tapia, of Round Lake, Ill., was formally charged in Kenosha County Circuit Court on Tuesday with battery to a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer, disorderly conduct, and operating while revoked. He also received citations for operating a motor vehicle without insurance, possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle as a driver, failure to keep a vehicle under control, operating while intoxicated (1st offense), deviation from designated lane, and failure of operator to notify police of an accident.
Juarez Tapia appeared in court the same day, where Court Commissioner William Michel II ordered $10,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 13.
According to the criminal complaint, deputies with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday to a vehicle rollover near 11303 County Highway U. Witnesses reported that the driver had fled on foot. Deputies later located Juarez Tapia approximately 400 feet from the crash site in a nearby field.
Officers observed visible injuries on Juarez Tapia and noted signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, red eyes, and the odor of alcohol. When deputies attempted to take him into custody, he allegedly became combative, kicked both officers, and repeatedly refused to cooperate or identify himself.
During transport to the hospital, Juarez Tapia continued to be aggressive and profane toward deputies, at one point making a fist and motioning as if to strike, the complaint states.
A check of his driving record revealed his license had been revoked since a 2009 OWI conviction in Wisconsin and had not been reinstated. The misdemeanor charge of operating while revoked includes an allegation that his prior offense qualifies under enhanced penalty provisions.
If convicted on all charges, Juarez Tapia faces several years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.
