KENOSHA, Wis. — An Illinois man who deputies say was driving the wrong way down Highway 31 with a blood alcohol level of .22 has been sentenced to probation and work-release after pleading guilty in Kenosha County Circuit Court.
Antonio Dejesus Reyes, 32, of Waukegan, was sentenced Sept. 23 by Judge Angelina Gabriele after earlier pleading guilty to second-degree recklessly endangering safety, a Class G felony. He also entered a guilty plea in a related operating while intoxicated case.
According to the criminal complaint, on Dec. 5, 2024, Kenosha County sheriff’s deputies encountered Reyes driving a white Jeep Compass south in the northbound lanes of Highway 31 after leaving a company party. Dashcam video showed vehicles swerving to avoid a collision. When stopped, Reyes exhibited slurred speech, red glossy eyes, and unsteady balance. He later admitted to drinking several beers and blew a .22 on a breath test — nearly three times the legal limit. Deputies also found a scale with leafy residue and THC packaging inside his vehicle.
At the plea hearing in July, Reyes admitted guilt to the felony charge, while a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia count was dismissed.
On Tuesday, Gabriele withheld a prison sentence and placed Reyes on three years of probation, with conditions including 60 days of work-release at the Kenosha County Jail beginning Oct. 4. The judge allowed only traditional Huber privileges, meaning Reyes may leave custody solely for verified employment. He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample, comply with probation rules, and pay court costs. He will receive credit for seven days served if his probation is ever revoked.
In the related traffic case, Reyes was fined $1,000 plus court costs, his driver’s license was revoked for one year, and he was ordered to install an ignition interlock device. He must also complete an OWI assessment.
The maximum penalty for second-degree recklessly endangering safety is up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
