KENOSHA, Wis. — The Kenosha Police and Fire Commission honored five police officers Tuesday morning for exceptional courage and professionalism that saved two lives in separate emergencies earlier this year.

Officer Alex Van Bogelen received a Life-Saving Award for reviving an unconscious man found on a basement stairwell behind an apartment building on July 2. According to department records, Van Bogelen recognized the man’s dire condition, carried him to safety, and began CPR when he stopped breathing. Paramedics later confirmed the man required intubation but made a full recovery within a week. The department determined that Van Bogelen’s immediate intervention made the difference between life and death.

Four additional officers — James Karaway, Oscar Flores, Dante Renzoni, and Kristin Peters — were recognized for their teamwork during a chaotic late-night call outside the Tipsy Kiwi Tavern on August 30. Responding to a disturbance involving a large crowd, they saw a 53-year-old man collapse and lose consciousness. Witnesses said he had been struck in the head with a bottle. The officers rotated performing CPR while Peters retrieved an AED and delivered a shock, restoring the man’s pulse before paramedics arrived. He was later hospitalized and recovered after several days in intensive care.
These officers’ actions exemplify the Kenosha Police Department’s R.I.S.E. model — Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence — the guiding principles for all members of the agency. Their commitment to those values is precisely why Sergeant Anthony Barriere nominated Officer Van Bogelen and Captain Matt Strelow nominated Officers Karaway, Flores, Renzoni, and Peters for the department’s Life-Saving Awards.

We at The Tipsy Kiwi could not be more grateful. Thank you all so very much for your actions, kindness and heroism. While we did ask if we could recognize you at our own event also, due to the fact it is an ongoing case we were unable to. Please know, you are held in the highest of esteem by all of our staff and patrons. Arohanui, Sarahjane
