SALEM LAKES, Wis. — After several days of heavy rain across Kenosha County, the Village of Salem Lakes is warning residents that the river is expected to crest at least two feet higher than its current level, raising concerns about possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Village officials announced Thursday that free sand and sandbags are available for Salem Lakes residents who may need to protect their homes, garages, basements, or other property from rising water.

Residents can pick up the materials on East Park Street near the railroad tracks, just south of the former Silver Lake Fire Rescue building.
The village urged residents to take necessary precautions now rather than wait for water levels to rise further. People who live near rivers, creeks, drainage ditches, or areas that are prone to flooding may want to begin moving valuables to higher ground, checking sump pumps, and preparing for possible water intrusion.
The warning comes after days of steady rainfall across southeastern Wisconsin, which has left saturated ground and standing water in many areas.
Village officials said the sand and bags are free but residents will need to fill and transport the bags themselves.
