KENOSHA, Wis. — As warmer weather returns and vegetation begins growing rapidly across the city, Kenosha officials are reminding residents of their responsibilities to maintain private property, sidewalks, and alleyways in accordance with city ordinances.
In a media release issued Wednesday, the City of Kenosha said property owners are responsible for maintaining areas from the street to their property line, including public right-of-ways and the portion of alleyways extending to the midpoint behind their homes.
City officials said residents are required to keep grass trimmed below 8 inches, remove weeds from yards and sidewalk cracks, and clear trash, debris, tires, limbs, and other materials from their properties. Alleyways must also remain clear of overgrowth and debris to allow access for emergency responders and city service crews.
The city additionally reminded residents that tree branches hanging over sidewalks must be trimmed to provide at least 8.5 feet of clearance.
“Proper maintenance is more than just curb appeal; it’s about community pride and safety,” Inspections Director Gary Roberts said in the release. “When residents clear debris and manage vegetation in their alleys they ensure that emergency vehicles and service equipment can pass through safely and efficiently.”
The Department of City Inspections said maintaining properties and alleyways is important for neighborhood appearance, safety, and accessibility during the busy growing season. Residents with questions or concerns can contact the department at 262-653-4263.

Dear The City of Kenosha,
As The Residents of Kenosha, we would like to remind you that it is your responsibility to maintain public roadways. As the weather warms up, the potholes only get worse. It is your legal obligation to ensure safe access and use of public roadways. If you fail to maintain the roadways in a safe and aesthetically pleasing fashion; the residents have the right to spray paint all cracks, potholes, sinkholes, and otherwise. This action will ensure all our cars don’t get severely damaged while you fail to perform the basic maintenance required and requested, time and time again, by The Residents of Kenosha. Again, do your fucking job, The City of Kenosha.
We will be watching,
The residents of Kenosha
