Today, 8/27/23 around 3:00pm Deputies Kelsey Schwuchow and Chris Bischoff were at the lakefront with their significant others enjoying their day off when Tim ( Deputy Schwuchow’s boyfriend and off- duty KFD firefighter) observed two juveniles that appeared to be struggling in the water approximately 60 yards out. The mother of these juveniles entered the water in attempt to save them. Initial reports indicate that none of the three knew how to swim.

Shortly after the mother entered the water, Deputies Schwuchow and Bischoff also entered the water and swam out to the struggling trio who were in approximately 9’ of water. Schwuchow and Bischoff both grabbed one juvenile each and attempted to bring them back to shore. Schwuchow told the mother to lie on her back, attempting to buy them time to get the juveniles ashore. The water current kept pulling everyone further out in the lake. At one point, both Schwuchow and Bischoff had to let go of the juveniles because they too were struggling to stay afloat. Once they gained their breath, they grabbed the juveniles again and brought them safely to shore. Schwuchow then grabbed the mother and brought her close enough that the mother could walk and Tim was able to take control of her giving Schwuchow a break.

As a result of this incredible lifesaving event and display of bravery, both Schwuchow and Bischoff ingested an enormous amount of water. Both were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

  1. Hero’s for putting their lives at risk and saving these 3 people. I am saddened of hearing people drowning & wish they’d quit swimming in that damn lake. Currents & undertows and bad!

    1. Certain ethnic groups do not swim and do not teach their children to swim, yet let them f around at the beach.

As a 10 year old I loved a good rain storm surge at pike river so my friends and I would jump into the “deadly” Pike River at Simmons Island and be shot out into the lake like a rocket. Then we would swim with the undertoe out until it disipated amd swim to shore.

Better than any water park I have ever been to.

Of course I learned to swim before kindergarten.

I rode the pike river (we called it creek) rocket a couple years ago at 50. Still fun; if you know how to swim…

Also we jumped off the pier by the lighthouse all day long in the 80s and didn’t drown. Ditto for the now gone piers at Southport park, which we also jumped our bikes off of.

Today’s kids are spastics and pu$$ys.
