SALEM LAKES, Wis. — Just one day after Kenosha County Eye revealed that Jason A. Kotarba, 17, charged with five felony counts of possessing child pornography, was said to have been allowed to attend Wilmot Union High School, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into a reported threat at the school.

According to a news release issued Wednesday, deputies investigated a “third-party communicated threat” allegedly made by a 17-year-old Wilmot High School student. The Sheriff’s Office later determined that no credible threat had been made against the school, its students, or staff.

Lieutenant Daniel Ruth, the department’s public information officer, stated that deputies worked closely with Wilmot school administrators and that additional deputies were assigned to the school “out of an abundance of caution.” Sheriff David Zoerner said in the release, “It is crucial to be vigilant and report any concerning behavior to the appropriate authorities. Let’s continue working together to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.”

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the student involved, but the timing of the investigation — less than 24 hours after what parents say was Kotarba’s return to campus — has raised eyebrows across Kenosha County. While authorities have not confirmed a connection, many parents say the proximity of events feels too coincidental to ignore.

School Statement and Parent Reaction

At 11:17 a.m. Thursday, Wilmot Union High School administration sent a mass email to parents addressing the Sheriff’s Office investigation and recent news coverage involving Kotarba.

“Dear Wilmot families, in order to follow up with you on the communication this morning, we wanted to acknowledge that we have been partnering with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, which will be issuing an official statement regarding their investigation into the reported threat made,” the letter read.
“The Wilmot Union High School District is also aware of the recent news coverage involving one of our students. We understand that there are questions and concerns about the student. Please know that the district is taking steps to ensure the safety of all students.”
The email went on to cite confidentiality laws that prevent the district from sharing information about Kotarba’s situation:

“It is important to understand that this student, like all of our students, is entitled by law and policy to confidentiality with regards to records and personally identifiable information. As a result, we are unable to share information about the student at this time.”
The message concluded by assuring families that the district’s “primary focus is to maintain an educational environment that is safe for all students.”
But many parents were not reassured. Several told Kenosha County Eye that the district’s response feels hollow and evasive — particularly after parents told Kenosha County Eye administrators Rob Kreil and Christy Weinstock allowed Kotarba to return to school despite his pending felony charges.
“Sickening,” “Disgusting,” and “Unacceptable”
A district mother told KCE:
“As a parent of two high school students at Wilmot I think it’s sickening that they are allowing the student to be on campus. As I was speaking with a group of friends about this today, one of them did speak to the principal and she was told there are protocols and a plan in place for his safety. His safety?! What about all the other students in the building?! It is 11:40 at night and we as parents still have not received any information from the school informing us about anything to help us feel safe about our children in school with a child who has been arrested for pending charges like those. My children will not be in attendance tomorrow and it’s unfortunate that these absences will count against them due to the school not keeping children safe.”
Chynee Lewkowicz echoed that frustration:
“My daughter just told me about this today! So beyond upset with the outcome! She will not be attending school tomorrow!”
Tara Nichole, another Wilmot parent, told KCE:
“My daughter goes to school here, also went to grade and middle school with him. She told me today he’s still at school with all of this going on. They need to do the right thing and remove him! He’s a predator. I’m in shock by the judge’s ruling allowing him out without bond, and rather than E-schooling he is in the building. So very disgusting. Tomorrow is going to be a walk-my-child-into-school day and demand answers.”

Court and Public Reaction
Kotarba was charged Tuesday in Kenosha County Circuit Court and released after Court Commissioner William Michel II ignored prosecutors’ request for a $10,000 cash bail. Multiple courthouse sources told KCE that Judge Chad Kerkman — who handled the case before Michel — may have instructed Michel to grant a no-cash release.
The decision drew outrage on social media and from local radio host Dan O’Donnell, who discussed the case on his Wednesday morning show. A courthouse insider told KCE:
“Bill Michel doesn’t have a backbone and it’s unlikely he’ll grow a pair to ever do the right thing.”
As of Thursday night, no further updates had been provided by either the school district or the Sheriff’s Office. Parents say they will continue to keep their children home until the district offers transparency and accountability.
Kotarba’s preliminary hearing in his felony case is scheduled for November 4 in Kenosha County Circuit Court.
