KENOSHA, Wis. — The Kenosha Professional Police Association has named Detective Eric Kukowski its 2025 Detective of the Year, recognizing a veteran investigator who colleagues describe as a leader, mentor and one of the department’s most respected detectives. The honor is particularly significant because it is awarded based on nominations from fellow officers and detectives who work alongside the recipient every day.
For those who know the inner workings of criminal investigations in Kenosha, the recognition comes as little surprise. Detective Eric Kukowski, who was hired by the Kenosha Police Department on Sept. 1, 2010, has earned a reputation as one of the department’s most trusted investigators and is frequently relied upon to handle some of the community’s most serious and complex criminal cases, including homicide investigations. His work has made him a familiar and respected figure within the Detective Bureau, where fellow investigators often turn to him for guidance and assistance.

According to the KPPA, Kukowski earned the respect of his colleagues through his leadership within the Detective Bureau, his professionalism and his willingness to assist others with their investigations. Fellow officers described him as someone who remains calm under pressure, leads by example and is always ready to lend a hand whenever needed.
Captain James Beller, commander of the Kenosha Police Department’s Detective Bureau, told Kenosha County Eye that Kukowski exemplifies the qualities every police agency hopes to find in a detective.
“Detective Kukowski is one of those detectives every agency hopes to have,” Beller told Kenosha County Eye. “He works hard, treats people the right way, and is always willing to help others. This award is especially meaningful because it comes from his peers, and it’s a reflection of the respect he has earned throughout the Detective Bureau.”

Those who work with Kukowski say his impact extends far beyond the cases assigned to him. Whether responding to a major crime scene, helping fellow detectives work through a difficult investigation, or mentoring less-experienced investigators, he has built a reputation as someone who is always willing to step forward when needed.
The Kenosha Professional Police Association noted that Kukowski’s leadership, professionalism and commitment to teamwork have made him a valuable resource for fellow officers and detectives throughout the department. Colleagues credited him not only for his investigative abilities but also for his positive attitude and willingness to help others succeed.

Association President Officer Rusten Sheskey said the award reflects the respect Kukowski has earned among the men and women who know his work best. Receiving recognition from fellow officers and detectives, Sheskey noted, is among the highest compliments an investigator can receive.
Police work often places detectives in difficult and emotionally taxing situations, particularly when investigating violent crimes. Those responsibilities require not only strong investigative skills, but also the ability to work effectively with victims, witnesses, fellow officers and prosecutors. Colleagues say Kukowski has consistently demonstrated those qualities throughout his career.
As one of the bureau’s senior investigators, Kukowski has spent nearly 16 years serving the City of Kenosha. During that time, he has developed a reputation for professionalism, dedication and a steady approach to some of the department’s most challenging investigations. Fellow detectives say his willingness to assist others and share his knowledge has helped strengthen the bureau as a whole.

According to the KPPA, Detective Kukowski’s dedication to teamwork, commitment to excellence and positive impact on those around him made him especially deserving of the recognition. The association congratulated him on what it described as a well-earned honor.
While awards and commendations are often measured by plaques and certificates, those who nominated Kukowski suggest this recognition means something more. Because the award comes directly from the detectives and officers who work beside him every day, it serves as a testament to the respect he has earned throughout the department and the lasting impact he has had on the Detective Bureau.
The Kenosha Professional Police Association concluded its announcement by congratulating Detective Eric Kukowski on being named the organization’s 2025 Detective of the Year and thanking him for his continued service to the City of Kenosha and its residents.
