BURLINGTON, Wis. — A Burlington man who served 25 years in the United States Air Force and continues to dedicate his time to helping fellow veterans has been named the First Congressional District’s 2026 Veteran of the Year. Congressman Bryan Steil (R-WI) presented the honor Thursday to retired Senior Master Sergeant Shane Morris in recognition of his military service and continued commitment to veterans and the community.
Morris has remained actively involved in supporting veterans long after retiring from the Air Force. He volunteers with several organizations, including the American Legion, American Veterans (AMVETS), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
According to Steil’s office, Morris routinely visits hospitalized veterans, provides transportation to veterans who need assistance getting to medical appointments, and organizes fundraising efforts to help veterans facing financial or personal hardships. His volunteer work has made a difference in the lives of veterans throughout southeastern Wisconsin.
Morris has also helped preserve military traditions and honor those who served. He has organized the annual flag retirement ceremony for Essman-Schroeder American Legion Post 20, an event that provides a respectful and dignified retirement for worn American flags.
The Veteran of the Year Award recognizes veterans who have demonstrated exceptional service to their country and continued dedication to their communities after leaving the military. Morris’s 25 years of military service, combined with his extensive volunteer efforts, earned him this year’s recognition.
The award highlights the contributions of veterans who continue serving their communities long after their military careers have ended. For Morris, retirement from the Air Force did not mean an end to serving others, but rather a continuation of his commitment to helping fellow veterans.
