Mark Jensen Retrial Day 15 – Jensen Son Takes Stand, Closing Statements Tomorrow

The jury has now seen all of the evidence in Mark Jensen’s retrial for the alleged anti-freeze murder of his wife, Julie. Tomorrow, the jury will be instructed by Judge Milisauskas and each side will make their closing arguments. The prosecution needs about one and a half hours and the defense, just over that.

Dr. Sara West is a forensic psychiatrist. She testified today, that based on her review, Julie Jensen was at a high risk of suicide. She came to this conclusion by a reasonable degree of medical certainty. Dr. West spoke to Mark for five hours and reviewed most of the case file. She said she based her opinion on several factors, including Julie’s behavior that West said was “detached from reality.”

Upon cross-examination, Jambois went through almost all of the witness statements and evidence in the case, and insulted Dr. West’s opinion and expertise. He frequently asked the same question time after time.

David Jensen, the eldest son of Mark and Julie testified first about his professional career. He told the jury he graduated from Bradford High School in 2008, and Parkside in 2012, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr. Jensen defended his 300-page dissertation in 2020, earning his doctorate in physiology and medical science at the medical college of Wisconsin. Dr. Jensen now works for a company that is hired by pharmaceutical companies to write manuscripts, congressional presentations and educational materials based on medical trials. Dr. Jensen spent some time telling the jury about his life when his mom was alive. He said he called Kelly (Labonte) Jensen mom eventually.

After Dr. Jensen finished testifying, the defense rested. Judge Milisauskas conducted a colloquy with Mark Jensen. He told Jensen that he had a constitutional right to either testify or not to testify. Jensen stated that he did not wish to testify. The prosecution then called several rebuttal witnesses.

Jill Pulera was formerly married to Paul Griffin, Julie’s younger brother. They divorced in 2010. She testified that she was close with Julie and lived close-by. She testified that Mark didn’t have a lot of contact with David when he was a baby and that didn’t sit well with Julie.

Detective Lieutenant Paul Ratzburg of the Pleasant Prairie Police Department was called to the stand for the third time, the second time by Jambois. He was asked the same questions as before and gave the same answers.

The final witness, Dr. Mary Mainland, the former Kenosha County Medical Examiner took the stand. Jambois attempted to rebut Dr. Hail’s testimony about the toxicological findings.

The parties and judge will finalize the jury instructions tomorrow morning and the closing arguments will be made. The jury is expected to begin deliberations tomorrow.
