KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. – Luis G. Medina, 45, of Waukegan, Ill., was booked into the Kenosha County Jail yesterday after Illinois authorities released him from prison. He will now begin serving his Wisconsin prison sentence, more than three years after being convicted on major drug and firearm charges.
Background of the Case
Medina was charged in October 2019 following a Kenosha Drug Operations Group investigation that included multiple undercover buys of cocaine and heroin, some within 1,000 feet of Southport Elementary School. Prosecutors alleged that Medina and his relative, Hector Soto, delivered large amounts of narcotics to a confidential informant in Kenosha throughout July and August 2019. Medina was also found with a Walther 9mm handgun despite being a convicted felon.
He was arrested after turning himself in December 2019, posting $25,000 cash bail the next day.
Convictions
On Jan. 21, 2022, Medina pleaded guilty to three felonies:
- Manufacture/Delivery of Cocaine (2nd offense)
- Manufacture/Delivery of Heroin (2nd offense)
- Possession of a Firearm by an Out-of-State Felon
Several other charges, including additional drug trafficking counts, were dismissed and read in.
Sentencing
On March 16, 2022, Judge Mary Kay Wagner sentenced Medina to:
- 22.5 years (15 years confinement, 7.5 years extended supervision) on the cocaine charge.
- 10 years (5 in, 5 out) on the heroin charge, concurrent.
- 5 years (2.5 in, 2.5 out) on the firearm charge, consecutive.
In total, Medina faces 27.5 years in the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He received 751 days of sentence credit.
Next Steps
With his release from Illinois prison, Medina will now begin serving the remainder of his Wisconsin sentence.
