JANESVILLE, Wis. — U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil is accepting nominations for Wisconsin’s First Congressional District’s 2025 Veteran of the Year, an annual honor recognizing a local veteran’s exceptional service and contributions to the community. Steil said the award is meant to spotlight an “unsung hero” whose commitment and dedication stand out in Southeast Wisconsin.
Eligible nominees must live in the First District, have been honorably discharged from one of the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces—including the Reserves, National Guard, or U.S. Merchant Marine—and be able to provide a DD-214. The selection will focus on three criteria: service to the community through advocacy, projects, acts of heroism, or other actions; excellence that demonstrates a sustained spirit of achievement; and dedication to supporting fellow veterans and strengthening connections between veterans and the broader community.
Nominations are due by October 20, 2025, and should be submitted through the district’s online nomination form. For questions, contact Steil’s Janesville office at 608-752-4050.
Last Year’s Honoree
On January 13, 2025, Steil presented Janesville veteran Sergeant Patrick “Pat” Riley with the 2024 First Congressional District Veteran of the Year Award. Sgt. Riley served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and remains active in the Vietnam Vets of America, Marine Corps League, and the Janesville VFW. He regularly volunteers in ceremonies on Memorial Day, POW/MIA Day, and Veterans Day in and around Janesville, including events at Oak Hill Cemetery, Traxler Park, and the Doughboy Statue downtown.
“Those men and women who have worn the uniform and served our country have paid a burden that many of us who have not served struggle to fully appreciate. Sergeant Riley’s fidelity to his country and community truly exemplifies what it means to serve. It is my honor to present him with the Veteran of the Year Award,” Steil said at the time.
