KENOSHA, Wis. – The Kenosha Police and Fire Commission on September 16, 2025, formally recognized Officer Alex Van Bogelen with the Life Saving Award for his quick and decisive actions that saved a man’s life earlier this summer.
On July 2, 2025, Van Bogelen, a two-year veteran assigned to second shift patrol, responded to what was initially reported as a loitering complaint at an apartment building on 22nd Avenue. When he arrived, he discovered an unconscious man lying on a stairwell leading to a basement door.
Realizing the man was unresponsive and in a dangerous position, Van Bogelen carried him to a safer location on the sidewalk, allowing for life-saving measures if needed. Moments later, the man stopped breathing. Van Bogelen immediately began CPR and directed another officer to retrieve an automated external defibrillator (AED). He continued efforts until Kenosha Fire Department personnel arrived and took over care, transporting the man to Aurora Medical Center.
Doctors later confirmed that the man required intubation and intensive care. Remarkably, by July 9 he had fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital. Officials credited Van Bogelen’s professionalism and dedication for the positive outcome.
Van Bogelen was nominated for the award by Sergeant Anthony Barriere, who commended his “exemplary professionalism, quick thinking, and a strong commitment to the well-being of those he serves”.
The Life Saving Award, presented at Tuesday’s Police and Fire Commission meeting, highlights acts of bravery and sacrifice above the call of duty. Van Bogelen’s actions were praised as a reflection of the department’s core values: Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence.
For his role in the July incident, Van Bogelen now joins a select group of Kenosha officers formally recognized for saving lives in the line of duty.
