KENOSHA, Wis. — A deadly fire that erupted at 10:39 p.m. Thursday tore through a multi-family apartment building at 5217-5231 43rd Avenue, leaving at least two people presumed dead and prompting a massive multi-agency response that stretched into the early morning hours. Sadly, a 10-year-old boy and his 9-year-old brother died as a result of the fire. Their 7-year-old sister was transported by flight-for-life from injuries sustained in the fire. Their father is being treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital.
Radio traffic recorded by Kenosha County Eye captured the first frantic dispatches reporting black smoke pouring from the building, followed quickly by multiple callers reporting that the structure was fully engulfed and that children and an adult were still inside.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., firefighters requested RIT and safety assignments as they arrived to find heavy fire conditions. Additional medical units were called shortly afterward, and a Working Still 53-1 response was activated, bringing in resources from Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue, Somers Fire & Rescue, Newport Fire Department, Paris EMS, Bristol Fire Department, and Kansasville EMS.

Dispatchers reported that two residents were unaccounted for, prompting more equipment and personnel to the scene. A fire investigator was requested at approximately 10:50 p.m., and a transit bus was summoned at about 11:15 p.m. to assist displaced residents.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control at approximately 11:17 p.m., with all firefighters accounted for. Moments later, the two young victims were removed from the building and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to radio traffic. A third victim, a 7-year-old girl, was removed a few minutes later and was taken to a hospital via flight for life.. Another individual, The children’s Father, suffering from smoke inhalation required medical transport after additional ambulances were ordered at approximately 11:26 p.m.
The Medical Examiner’s Office was notified shortly after the initial recoveries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials working into Wednesday morning to determine what sparked the deadly blaze. Authorities have not yet released the ages or identities of the victims.
