2. Awesome! One small edit, instead of stating that the City purchased the armored personnel carrier , it should say that we (taxpayers) purchased it; along with all the fuel the vehicles used to go to the coffee shop.

      1. I can see this justified for patrol down at the lake front. Don’t see the need for them to drive it all over town. But for what they spent on that they could of bought multiple ATVs for patrolling the lake front.

      1. I’m all for the front line working officers. It’s all the other made up positions in the office areas. It’s a little backwards to me when an office administrator (glorified receptionist) is making almost doubled the salary of a front line officer!

   2. Community outreach is an essential function of law enforcement agencies and officers. Doing events like this creates goodwill with the public which is essential for them to carry out all of their other functions.

   4. Did you miss the part in the first paragraph of the article where it said they are there to “interact with the public, answer questions, and show off tactical equipment”. PR and education is part of their on-duty work. Their job entails more than just your narrow view. Sounds like you could use some education yourself. …and maybe not seeing everything through a negative lense.

      Also, Ashley is great!

   2. The truth is that this is good police work. One of the toughest cops of all, Chief Harold Breier, said that every officer is a community relations specialist. Good cops interact frequently with the public in the community. People tell you things that they won’t call in. (Have you tried calling a police department? If you dial 911, it can be intimidating. Other times you may get a recording or someone irritated to talk to you.). Good cops know this. Good cops actually make it a point to take a few minutes to make themselves visible and available. We need more good cops and supervisors that will let them be good cops. When we walked beats we learned a lot. We stopped in businesses, talked to people, learned things and followed up on community problems. Driving around with the windows rolled up, not so much.

      The folks who don’t understand this don’t have a clue about police work.

         1. Thank you, Kevin, for a good story about a good young person doing something good in the community. It’s nice to know that not everyone is out to rip off taxpayers, hit on teenagers that they teach or use the public office for personal gain. Easy to lose sight of the good.

            As for the person who doesn’t understand police work it reminded me of driving through Des Moines and seeing a fire truck parked outside a business with a sign, ‘DES MOINES FIREFIGHTERS DOING SAFETY INSPECTIONS. RESPOND TO EMERGENCY CALLS BY RADIO.” Duh.

      2. How is this any different (aside from actual amount) than Gateway using tax money to pay for all the charcuterie boards and food? Because it’s the cops that makes it okay?
