KENOSHA, Wis. — A 51-year-old Kenosha man who inserted himself into the 2026 Kenosha County sheriff's race by privately supplying information to a local hate blogger was once charged with felony child abuse after punching his 13-year-old daughter in the jaw with a closed fist, causing her knees to buckle and sending her to the ground. Benjamin Vargas had earlier picked up his daughter and her friend from a youth group at their church and was severely intoxicated while driving, traveling at such a high rate of speed that the girls were frightened.
The confrontation began when Vargas told his 18-year-old stepdaughter, whom he had raised for 16 years, that she was not worthy of wearing a piece of clothing bearing his last name. When his 13-year-old daughter intervened, Vargas punched her in the jaw, leaving her injured. Vargas defended his actions to police, saying he was her father and had the right to discipline her. Vargas was arrested and charged with felony physical abuse of a child, intentionally causing bodily harm, a Class H felony.
