Indian Trail Art Teacher Resigns After Being Caught With Secret Bed in Locked Closet

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Indian Trail High School art teacher who was previously reprimanded for keeping a hidden bed inside a locked storage closet and misleading administrators has officially resigned from his position, effective at the end of the current school year.

Odin D. Cabal II submitted a resignation letter dated April 17, 2025, to Indian Trail Principal Scott Kennow and Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Weiss. In it, Cabal stated his intention not to return for the 2025–2026 academic year and confirmed his final day of employment will be the last day of his current contract.

“This was not a decision I made lightly,” Cabal wrote in the letter. “I have greatly valued my time at Indian Trail High School. I have enjoyed working with the students, my colleagues, and the administration.”

Cabal’s resignation follows a bizarre disciplinary episode that began in December 2024, when school security staff discovered a suspiciously unsecured hallway door near Cabal’s classroom. Behind the door was a locked storage closet, which had been barricaded from the inside using an “Alice” rope — a type of emergency lockdown tool.

Inside, staff found a makeshift sleeping area, including a mattress of bedding materials. The closet was accessible only from Cabal’s classroom and had been kept locked from general access. When questioned by Principal Kennow, Cabal initially denied that the bed existed. After being told that security footage might be reviewed, he admitted to lying and claimed the bed was used to take naps during his lunch break or after school hours.

While investigators found no evidence that students had entered the specific closet containing the bed, a separate discovery raised additional concerns. During the same walkthrough, Principal Kennow opened another storage closet and found three students inside, alone and unsupervised. One was using a phone, another was working on a laptop, and the third was engaged in another activity. None of the students were being monitored by Cabal at the time.

On January 6, 2025, Cabal was issued a formal letter of reprimand. The district cited him for “insubordinate conduct towards a supervisor” and “providing false statements to your supervisor or during an investigation.” Despite those violations, he was returned to classroom duties that same day. The decision sparked debate among some staff and parents over whether the disciplinary response was sufficient, particularly in light of the additional concern regarding student supervision.

Cabal had reportedly remained under close scrutiny following his return to teaching. Though no further incidents were disclosed publicly, his continued presence in the classroom remained controversial for some within the school community.

His resignation letter did not mention any of the disciplinary issues and instead framed his decision as personal and reflective. “I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition during the remainder of the school year,” he wrote. “I am happy to cooperate in any way possible to minimize disruption to the students and the school.”

Cabal began teaching at Indian Trail in 2022. His departure brings an end to one of the more unusual personnel matters in recent years at Kenosha Unified, involving locked rooms, false statements, and student supervision issues that drew widespread attention.

It remains unknown whether Cabal plans to seek another teaching role or change professions entirely.

  1. We need to close that school. If I had a dollar for every story they started with Indian Trail, I’d be closer to retirement.

  2. Sleeping at school, lying to superiors and not supervising students… This guy is a teacher? Someone who is supposed to help mold young minds? Sounds like the opposite of a teacher to me. I can only imagine the kind of verbal interaction he has with his students.

  3. There is something missing and he’s not gonna tell on himself. Leaving the job before it hits the fan is a good idea. Still weird

  4. You know RUSD or MPS is chomping at the bits to get this guy in their district. It’s called the “resign or termination” game.
This way they get to go be pervs elsewhere.
Back home we had a music teacher sleeping with students. She was allowed to just “resign”. Well now she’s a music teacher out on the east coast…doing Lord knows what (or who)

  5. My Principal, our PTO, my Fellow Teachers, and I would have never permitted a colleague to spend a single minute with the kids in our school going forward had a similar set of circumstances occurred in our school. Either he stays away…or we lock him in that closet while we all take turns covering his class.

To let him back with the kids….and allow him to resign….only means this punk POS gets a job in another District to restart his grooming process in another community.

What a gutless and cowardly set of decisions made by Jeffrey Weiss and his Stooges down at the ESC.

  6. … people (employees) in the public sector are being allowed to resign instead of being fired.

So that their resumes don’t show the negative.

KUSD is colluding with all these employees to perpetuate the bad behavior and sending these bad apples down the road with nothing on their permanent records.

Our only hope is that HR professionals at all schools, including this one, are going further than just calling the references cited by the applicant.
Go on social media. Google these names. All names. Look for these type of stories on these questionable “employees” and see what was left behind in their wake of leaving a job.

THIS IS WHY KEVIN MATHEWSON IS SO IMPORTANT !!!!!

You’re not getting this kind of reporting up and down the dial. (Boomer reference there)

    1. What is it with Indian Trail….who is responsible for hiring there……need to re-evaluate some of these positions with administration…you could probably balance our budget with the elimination of some if the office personnel on 52nd…

  7. You are harassing an innocent man for taking naps during his prep period and you’re calling it journalism. Have you considered that maybe you just mind your own business? Have you really run THAT low on material? To report on blankets in a closet?

    1. Teachers are paid salary. Which would mean he would technically be getting compensated to take a nap while on the clock. Are you saying you support tax payer money going into the pockets of a teacher “sleeping” on the job. Please name one job in which it’s deemed ethical to sleep while on the clock. If he’s that tired , then I would think he has a home he could return to at the end of the day with a bed of his own to get rest. Hell, if anything take a sick day or personal day if he’s that sleep deprived if he needs to do so to catch up on rest. That’s clearly not the case here and is not what’s going on here. You truly can not be that dumb founded…. To justify this kinda conduct in the slightest bit.
