KENOSHA, Wis. – A Kenosha man with a history of domestic violence was charged Friday after allegedly threatening the mother of his children with a baseball bat and a knife during a late-night incident that police say escalated into a terrifying ordeal.
Darrell D. Garrett, 43, faces one count of disorderly conduct with domestic abuse and domestic abuse repeater enhancers. Prosecutors say Garrett’s actions on June 6, 2025, created a threatening and chaotic environment inside a small apartment near 50th Street and 43rd Avenue. He made his initial appearance in Kenosha County Circuit Court today. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 13.
According to the criminal complaint, Kenosha police responded to an apartment in the 4200 block of 50th Street just after midnight after receiving a 911 call reporting a man armed with a knife. When officers arrived, they found a visibly shaken woman who was struggling to hold back tears.
She told police that Garrett, her ex-partner and the father of her two children, had shown up at her apartment earlier that night. She said he had nowhere else to go and often stayed with her temporarily. He arrived with a four-pack of beer, which he drank while inside the apartment, and appeared visibly intoxicated, according to the woman.
As the evening progressed, Garrett allegedly began to argue with her about their relationship. His behavior quickly escalated. He paced back and forth in the apartment, shouting threats. At one point, the woman said Garrett told her, “I’m going to f— you up,” before retreating into a bedroom and returning with a baseball bat, which he held horizontally in both hands.
The threats continued, and Garrett allegedly repeated the same threatening phrase as he held the bat. Then, the situation took a darker turn. He began making threats of self-harm and retrieved a large silver kitchen knife, approximately eight inches long. The woman said Garrett appeared to start cutting himself. Fearing for her safety, she left the apartment and called police.
A witness, the woman’s cousin Parry Gibson, was also present during the incident and confirmed much of her account. Gibson told officers that he had been staying at the apartment for several days and observed Garrett pacing through the apartment with the bat. He said Garrett was yelling at the woman while holding the weapon and eventually grabbed the kitchen knife and pretended to cut himself, using the blunt side of the blade.
When officers later interviewed Garrett, they noted he had no visible injuries. He admitted that he had walked around the apartment with a baseball bat and, when “that didn’t work,” grabbed a knife to make threats of self-harm. Garrett told police he never intended to kill himself but was trying to scare the woman.
Prosecutors have charged Garrett as a domestic abuse repeater, citing two prior domestic violence convictions in Kenosha County. Records show he was convicted of battery with a domestic abuse enhancer in 2005, and disorderly conduct with multiple enhancers—including use of a dangerous weapon and habitual criminality—in 2011. Both convictions remain on record and have not been reversed.
Because of the repeater enhancement, what would normally be a misdemeanor charge is elevated, and Garrett now faces up to two years and 90 days in jail if convicted.
