KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha woman is suing Kenosha County after a sheriff’s squad allegedly ran a red light and drove through a funeral procession, crashing into her vehicle and causing serious injuries.
Alexis T. Caruso, who lives on 75th Street, filed the civil lawsuit in Kenosha County Circuit Court on June 11, 2025. The crash occurred on February 15 around 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 158 and 39th Avenue.
According to the complaint, Caruso was driving northbound on 39th Avenue with a green light when a marked sheriff’s squad entered the intersection eastbound on 158 and ran a red light, colliding with her vehicle. The squad also reportedly passed through an active funeral procession traveling southbound on 39th at the time of the crash.
Caruso alleges the deputy failed to yield the right of way and was negligent in his speed, lookout, and control of the vehicle. She claims to have suffered injuries to her head, neck, and right knee, as well as a laceration to her left hand and significant anxiety. The lawsuit seeks damages for ongoing medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and reduced earning capacity.
Kenosha County has refused to pay any of Caruso’s medical bills. In a formal denial letter dated April 7, the county’s Corporation Counsel stated that it does not believe the county is legally responsible for any of the damages or injuries Caruso has claimed.

The police report filed by a Wisconsin State Trooper states that the deputy was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash. That same report attributes fault to Caruso, alleging that she was speeding and failed to yield — conclusions that appear to contradict witness statements and other evidence cited in the lawsuit.
Caruso is represented by attorney Kelly Leibhan of the well-known Wisconsin personal injury law firm Habush Habush & Rottier S.C.
The lawsuit names Kenosha County, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy, Wisconsin Municipal Mutual Insurance Company, and unnamed insurance entities as defendants. UnitedHealthcare of Wisconsin, Inc. and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services are listed as involuntary plaintiffs due to potential subrogation interests.
The case is in its early stages and no court dates have yet been set.
